Pentax Primes

I came accross this discussion on Photo.net and thought it was pretty interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing what the views on a three prime lens setup here on the Pentaxforums would be.

Pentax Forum: Thoughts on current Pentax Primes?? - photo.net

I would probably go with the the DA Limited treo combination of the 21, 40 and 70mm rather than the FA's so as to optimize the sensor on my K10D.

I'm currently very happy with my combo of:

M 20/4
FA 31/1.8
M 50/1.4

I'd like to add a DA14 and FA77 to stretch out a bit (especially for film), but these are the primary focal lengths I use.

Across film and digital, my fave (and most modern) lenses:
A 28/2.8
43 ltd
70 ltd

I'd be tempted to pick the Tamron adaptall 90/2.5 macro instead of the 70, but that wouldn't be Pentax, now would it?

No, but it's a fantastic lens. An oldie but a goodie.

I have the 3 DA limited lenses & they make for a great combination. Small, sharp, fairly fast & the image quality is great.

Of course this could be an endless thread of the various likes and dislikes of each lens but all the prime choices are fantastic lenses. I opted for the FA versions. 20,35,43,50 & 77. Each is a great lens in it's own right. I had to sell the lot to raise some cash but it has me thinking. When the time comes, which will I replace?

43, 50 and 77 without question. 35<>31. if the funds permit it will be the 31 but the 35 is a great lens and not much of a step down. I wish the 21 was faster so I'll most likely get a 14mm. Then add a Sigma 12-24mm again to round out the wide end.

I'm pretty new to pentax in terms of switching over from canon in both film and digital (well I still have my Canon P rangefinder). Pretty much I try to stay with lens that'll work on both the digital and film bodies.

Ideally since I don't shoot much telephoto and I want to go digital and film, I'd probably get

Pentax-A 24 (or FA equiv)
FA 50/1.4
and maybe the 85mm 1.9 lens.

Or I could go with a DA40 an DA70 on the later two since they both work on a film body.

My 3 would be (from my sig):

The Zenitar, Helios, and Tamron 90 Macro. Cha-ching The Limiteds together would be prohibitively expensive :/

My thoughts

The prime list discussion is very interesting to me as I currently don't have the limited primes in the list.

I can't afford any of the limited prime lens and the only prime that I get on the list is FA 50 f/1.4 and I love it and I see myself kicking into the wall like mad in selling that lens. I love the listing provided by Tom in comparing the cost and the FOV in getting the DA and FA list of lineup. That really gets me thinking, thank you Tom.

I want the 21mm as I really love the manual lens that I have with Vivitar 24mm f/2.8 ($5.0) and Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 ($20). And 'cheap motto' is ingrained on my forehead when I shop for gear. It is actually more expensive to be cheap as I wasted a lot of time in finding the good gear for low price. Shame on me or (proud of me)!!! But I have to be silly in order to grow up, my 2008 resolution. At the current moment, I don't sway to one side of FA or DA but rather a mix of the two as I have fantasy with B&W and slides film with wonderful Pentax film cameras.

Hin's desired lineup with 'cheap motto':
  • SMCP-DA 70mm f2.4 = $450
  • SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 = $200
  • SMCP-FA 35mm f2.0 = $299
  • SMCP-DA 21mm f3.2 = $439
  • SMCP-DA 14mm f/2.8 = $559 (price too big)

and instead of prime in 14mm, I settle for SMC DA 10-17 for the fisheye zoom around $385. In the list, I can swap the two lens in 50mm and 35mm with 43mm f/1.9 and save on the overall cost and it becomes very similar to what Godfrey has discussed in the photo.net on his list. Now I see the picture of kicking myself in the wall in selling the FA 50mm f/1.4. My revised list will become
  • SMCP-DA 70mm f2.4 = $450
  • SMCP-FA 43mm f/1.9 = $469
  • SMCP-DA 21mm f3.2 = $439
  • SMCP-DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 = $389

I often take 3 at a time out of the following since my bag isn't very large:

DA14
DA21
FA31
FA43
FA50 Macro
A*85
FA135

I think the 21/43 combination is really good, plus any other depending on the purpose in mind. You might notice 21 will be wide enough for you; for me it usually is, and I don't need to use the kit lens or 14mm very often.

That is an impressive list of lenses!

Your choice to bring 21/43 are in deed very good selections. I often bring fa 77 and fa 31. That was all I take nowadays.

My 3-prime set comprises 21/43/77.

I don't shoot film so FA or DA is not a big factor; reasons I chose these out of the six Limiteds:
21: I'd like one faster similar size but there's no other choice
31: Out of my price range
43: Chose it over the 40 for its faster speed, over the 35/50 combo to keep set to three
77: I'd be equally happy with a 70 iq-wise, but the beautiful sight of the 77's front piece of glass makes it worth the extra $

Just curious, why did you go with the FA's only? Do you shoot film and digital? Do you consider them to be much better than the DA's? I have to admit I do like the 43mm

If I was limited to three primes those would be:
FA*300/4.5 - for the reach and IQ
FA 31/1.8 Limited - for the 3D effect and bokeh and quality of craftmanship
FA 20/2.8 - I like this focal length on the K10D

No's 4, 5 and 6:
D FA100/2.8 Macro or FA 100/2.8 macro - I need a macro!
FA* 24/2 - for low light street photography
A* 85/1.4 - for low light street photography and beauty of craftmanship!
