Extreme Corner Performance Shootout - FA 43mm vs DA18-135 vs DA*50-135

This is my not very accurate comparison of extreme corner performance between the 3 popular lens. I note FA43mm was recently tested by Photozone and scored no better than 18-135mm (actually worse). No one seems to talk about the corner performance of 50-135. These are absolute corner crops, any difference observed is solely due to framing. So, without further ado, here are the results:

First up, 18-135mm @ 40mm @ f4.5 (wide open)

same lens @ f8.0

Next, 50-135 @ 50mm f2.8

same lens @75mm f2.8

Finally, 43mm @ f1.9

same lens @ f2.8

same lens @ f4.0

Wow, that's a poor show from your 50-135 in the corners. Mine's nowhere near that bad :S The DA 18-135 looks comparable. It gets a bad press but the IQ really doesn't seem too bad from it from what I've seen.

user error on the 50-135mm. the testing paper appears to have tilted forward slightly. Just to show how tiny bit error can introduce difference in results.

Also, when was the last time you actually tested the extreme corner performance?

Yeah, DoF is very thin at 70mm especially. And I did a few quick tests a few moments ago. If you focus on the edge of the frame, it's still very clear. Nothing spectacularly scientific, but enough to reassure me that if I need something in focus on the frame edge, I can do it without worrying about clarity.

Yeah that's looking more like my copy now. I've not tested for field curvature or anything on my 50-135, but it's really strong on the DA* 16-50, which makes corners on a flat subject look soft. You have to choose a focus point if you want a sharp subject off centre, rather than focus and re-compose. But once you do, it tends to be very sharp at any setting.

Would you say this is the case with the 50-135?

I'm still impressed by the 18-135 though. It's not up to the standards of the 43mm or the DA* at f/4.0, but that's quite a high bar to set, and it's certainly not bad. It looks very nice at f/8.0 too.
