Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 aperture help

folks,
I've received a great condition lens (see subject) with one big problem. The aperture ring only turns from 1.7 over to about f/8. I can't get 11/16/22 and most importantly, A. I'm mounting it on a k-5. It is works fine in M using the green button to meter. Looks sharp. But I've already got an M version of this lens, so I really want to get this working. I am willing to do some basic disassembly but would appreciate any suggestions for non-invasive fixes, or for someone to tell me I'm an idiot and am doing something basically wrong. I've shot a lot of manual cameras, so I'm thinking I'm doing it right, but you never know what you don't know. Lastly, theories on how to disassemble and possible fix the lens would also be cool. Any feedback appreciated. I'd love to save the lens. Thanks.

Your problem is not unique. The plastic build of the Pentax-A 50/1.7 often results in an inoperative aperture ring caused by a broken pin in the mechanism. To the best of my knowledge there is no non-invasive fix. My copy of this lens has a pretty flaky aperture ring, but I am lucky that it is able to reach the "A" position and that is where I leave it.

Watch out. It's not simple to disassemble "A" lenses. There are some really tiny parts, a pin and a coil, and if you lose it the lens is pretty much trashed.

With steady fingers, they're easy but even so, from my experience, those pin and spring is a B***H to place back as you also risk losing the aperture click balls while putting everything back together.. LOL!
