D FA 100mm Macro WR jerky focusing ring

Hi all,

I just received my DFA 100mm Macro WR. I noticed right away that the focusing ring is far from smooth. Being a Quick Shift it should be smooth even in AF-mode, but it is never smooth, not in MF, not when off the camera. It feels a bit like when turning a set of small cog wheels that are not toothed right - uneven resistance, but with the same unevenness for each revolution (if that makes any sense). Twisting the focus all the way from close to far gives me 10 "periods" of jerky resistance, not very strong, but sufficient to make precise focusing difficult.

Just as a comparison, my non-quick shift Sigma gives more resistance, but also more even, if the camera is in AF-mode. And even the kit lens (w/quick shift) is *far* more smooth than this DFA. The 15 Ltd is in another league entirely.

I suppose the only thing to do is to return it...

I think you just answered your own question. Good luck.

Yes that does not seem correct.
I do not notice any variance in resistance with my DFA100WR and most of my macro focus is done manually.
Return for a replacement.

Not good, mine is silky smooth all through the focus throw.

Yes, will definitely return it. It's the first defective lens I've had, and it put me a bit off - have to let my disappointment level sink a bit before returning it, or else I won't want a new one

It is quite prone to CA wide open, but *very* sharp. And anyway, there is nothing wrong with the 15 Ltd I got in the same shipment - smooth as silk, sharp as a razor (at least in the center!)

Some have indicated CA in some copies.
My copy happens to have little to no CA problems so your replacement may be better.

Yes, definitely hope the replacement is better. Although there isn't much left of the CA at 3.2, well, I'd expect there wasn't much at 2.8 either, really.

I'll need to talk to the shop before returning. If they suggest to repair it rather than exchange it, I'll just cancel the deal and look elsewhere.
