here was a long discussion of this in the thread about the 560. No agreement was really come to. consensus leaned towards it may not make much difference in the greater scheme of things

I thought the ramming was already complete due to the lens price increase

Might be lame, but pretty important on extreme tele lenses. The expansion of lens elements within the lens can throw focus off pretty far. Also, performance issues come into play when you have large lens elements changing size.
There's another thread on this somewhere and the same issues/solutions/arguments were raised (560mm thread I think). Nikon / Sigma /Tamron / Sony / Tokina do not seem to agree that long teles need to be white. It's a Canon thing.

the freaking enormous, heavy - 564lbs and expensive -just one element is about the same cost as a nice S500 sedan zeiss 1700 mm is white - and will require a custom made support to use it - THAT IS A HASSY 6X6 ON THE BACK

those big lenses do get very hot sitting outside on a tripod in the summer sun; i have to imagine white makes more sense.

i always wondered why musical instrument cases are most often black when you can really screw up your instrument if it gets too hot.

My banjo-mandolin case is bright pink and it's not a social statement. But since many musicians are night-crawlers and troglodytes, with selves and instruments rarely seeing sunlight, case color might not matter so much.
