Overpriced DA 40mm XS now in stock ;)

Here it is, $100 more than what you pay in the K-01 kit:

Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS Lens 22137 B&H Photo Video

Why would anyone buy the Limited now, when this is half the price? I expect this will be a very popular lens for Pentax.

Why? Because it's still not a Limited.

Why would anyone buy an Omega watch at 10x the price of an excellent Tissot for example, same anwser as above.

No Quick-Shift, no serious hood.
In other words, the XS is slower for rapid shooting of unexpected subjects against the light.

actually I think the mount is metal. But otherwise I agree with lytrytyr about the advantages that the DA 40 limited has over the XS version.

Why would anyone buy a Tissot,
when a Chinese watch with Japanese movement is as accurate,
and costs less than a battery replacement for the Tissot?

Thanks for the correction. Reference to plastic mount deleted.

Because they wouldn't be seen dead with a Marc Newson design?

Although I agree with Kenafein that this may well be a popular lens among the casual users of Pentax DSLRs (those who may never be willing to pay more than $300-400 for a prime lens) for the same reason that the original DA 40 was popular (great optical abilities, tiny size, cheapest limited) and also why the DA 35 f/2.4 is an apparent hit (cheap price and great optics). I wouldn't trade my beautiful all-metal DA 40 limited for the plastic XS but if I were buying one right now, I'd be very tempted by the XS given that it's half the the price of a new DA 40 limited ($500 at B&H, although Amazon sells it for a little under $400).

Whether metal build, quick shift, and lens hood are worth double the price is one issue, but the Limited is apparently sharper than the XS version, according to one review I found online:
Pentax Lens: Primes - Pentax 40mm f/2.8 XS SMC DA (Tested) - SLRgear.com!

QuoteQuote:
The Limited SMC P-DA does offer significantly more sharpness than the XS model as well as convincingly better performance regarding chromatic aberration.
Although apparently some may disagree with this conclusion.

How do you know that that's not sample variation?

I don't know and you're right to point it out. This "conclusion" is just one reviewer's findings. According to the PF reviews of the XS lens, the optical performance is equal to the limited lens. So YMMV.

That conclusion by SLRgear appeared to be based on their "blur units."
However, the LTD was tested on the K-10, and the XS on the K5.
The exact same optics would tend to show more blur units on the 16MP K5
than they would on the 10MP K-10..

I would be tempted, but I have not had luck with primes.
