Price Jump of the DA* 16-50

A few months ago I was on Amazon and B&H and they were selling the DA* 16-50mm f2.8 lens for about $900 today they're up around $1400! Anyone know what's going on? Is this a temporary supply shortage and the price will come down if I hold out a few months? Is it a brand-new version of the lens and the price exploded?

I'd love some advice on this as I've finally saved up enough that I can swing this lens, but I don't want to pay 50% more!

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately the price has gone up for good. See this news post for more info:

An arguably better lens is the Sigma 17-50mm:

It scored higher in our 3-way comparative review:

Given you are in Seattle and it is as wet as the UK, you may wish to stick with the 16-50, but go second hand instead.

Thanks for the replies! I think I may indeed go the Sigma route. While yes, the weather is pretty much identical to at least where I've lived in the South of England, it's a bit of a moot point as about 80% of my shooting is indoors in my "studio" which my apartment complex insists on calling a racquetball court, but we all know better!

Thanks all for the very prompt and detailed responses!
