Samyang 85/1.4 vs FA 50mm 1.4

Anyone have both lenses and can compare them? I have the FA 50mm 1.4 lens now which I love and use 90% of the time. I find the auto-focus can be off sometimes with the lens but overall happy with it. My main gripe is sharpness at 1.4. The bokeh is great but the lack of sharpness prevents me from using the lens at 1.4 and I usually move up to 1.8 for portraits. I've been doing a lot of portrait photography lately and I'd like to have a sharp 1.4 lens. I would not sell the FA 50mm, but keep it alongside since the price for the 85mm is about $300 only.

If someone has had both lenses or can recommend if it would be worthwhile to also have the 85mm 1.4 lens that would be great. I don't have problem using manual focus as I've had to do that with the 50mm many times before and for my older Pentax lenses.

Thank you.

You will love Samyang then. I can post some comparison shots but it wouldn't be before weekend due to my travel.

Thanks. I've always loved using the FA 50mm 1.4 on my Pentax K100D Super but I think because of the 6MP resolution some of the sharpness issues at 1.4 were hidden. I'm using a K-x for right now and I'm seeing a lot more issues then I'd like, but again, it's a great lens. I'm very tempted to buy this lens and the Samyang 8m 3.5 fisheye as well instead of the Sigma 8-16.

Any things you don't like about the lens? I heard the contrast might be a little off compared to the Takumar 85mm 1.9? I haven't found the Takumar anywhere for sale.

My copy of Samyang is better than Taks 85 1.9 & M85/2 which I previously owned. At 1.4 it produces creamy bokeh and pretty sharp. Please note, my earlier copy (Rockinon branded) wasn't as good so there is a possibility of sample to sample variations.

The samyang 85mm I used to have quite pretty damn sharp, even wide open. Only problem I had with it was it had just too little DoF wide open, I had to stop things down just so I could get more than just half an eyeball in focus

Ok good to know, I was debating on which version of the Samyang to buy as well if I did. Amazon sells the Rockinon brand and B&H has the Samyang brand. How do you find the CA on the lens? The FA at 1.4 is pretty harsh, another reason to avoid using it wide open.

I have a samyang (branded vivitar) 85/1.4 and from all the shots I have taken I can say it is on par to either of my 50/1.4 lenses (super tak 50/1.4 8 element, and K50/1.4)

I have not compared it to the Super tak 85/1.9 that I also own for sharpness, but it has a different Bokeh, and does not have the longitudinal CA that leaves a green halo around the background OOF but near focus detail. although that can be quite useful in some shots.

overall i like the samyang, as a great out and candid (but from a distance ) lens for people shooting in cities. You should check the samyang lens club for example shots

Great lens - a really versatile lens that can be used for everything from portrait work to indoor court sports...

Just "won" this lens on ebay. My wife has a baby girl coming and this lens features strongly in a project I have planned for her first year. Happy to hear its highly regarded.
