This is exactly what I was referring to. The first image "A 1.2 or F2" I have seen hundreds of them. The second image is the exact lens I was asking about and purchased at the sale. I had never seen heard of or handled one till this point in time. It interested my curiosity when the lens was larger than any of the 1.2's I had seen before.

Thank you for posting these images.

[If you own "smc PENTAX-A 1.2 50mm" (not 1:1.2) this should be reported to Bojidar Dimitrov immediately and posted on his site. Could you please post pictures of both?]

I have in my lens cabinet around 11, "50mm A 1.2 's" some are different from the others but quite similar, most are exactly the same. I have not handled them for quite some time. I will photograph them when time allows and forward the images to Bojidar Dimitrov. I have no problem e-mailing images just posting them as explained earlier in this thread.
If you have 11 of what's pictured, they'd be marked A 1:2 not 1.2. What you scored at the estate sale is the A 1:1.2. I think Bojidar Dimitrov would only be interested if you had a lens marked A 1.2

I'd like to help; which is why I asked a number of questions, to have some understanding of your environment... You can selectively turn firewall restrictions off, but there are 4 or 5 possible versions of Windows alone that you could be running, each operating and configured differently, and out of the many possibilities most likely about 4 or 5 different firewall brands, with a number of different versions of each. If your run Mac, hoping someone else can help as I don't know that platform.
I getting near my end of the night here, I have actually been considering a new MacBook in the very near future like this weekend. I am tiring very quickly of the windows OS.

Good guess, but it's all about the 77.

Wendy, to answer your original question, the lens is 500 dollars because it's a "f = 1/1.2" (alternatively spelled "1:1.2") as opposed to the A 1:2 ( f=1/2). That means the aperture opens up a half stop more (i think, I may be wrong in the calculus) than the 50mm f=1/1.4, making it the "fastest" (biggest aperture) lens in the Pentax lineup.
For what it's worth, about half a stop. With more precision:

Code:
; sqrt(2)^0
1
; sqrt(2)^0.5
~1.18920712
; sqrt(2)^1
~1.41421356
; sqrt(2)^1.5
~1.68179283
; sqrt(2)^2
~2.00000000
; sqrt(2)^2.5
~2.37841423
; sqrt(2)^3
~2.82842712
; sqrt(2)^3.5
~3.36358566
; sqrt(2)^4
~4.00000000

I'd guess the 77 Limited. (But then, that wasn't much of a "guess" since I checked the exif data)
Cheater!

Actually, I should have guessed from the image - obviously low (<3) fstop from the shallow DOF, but the area in focus is just too sharp for the FA 50mm set lower than 4.5. plus the subject looks like he was caught more unaware than a 50mm length generally allows, looks just more 'telephoto' than 50mm.

Boy, that's a nice lens.

Hey, if I spring for the K20D in a couple months, it's going to need a nice limited to do it justice, right? ... Right? Help me out here.

Okay - you've got 11 A 1.2s - let's see them. You can always post a link to the pictures elsewhere if you can't post the actual images here.

Yeah, the ipanda exif viewer is pretty cool - I don't consider it cheating.

You, know, you can get the 77 before you get the K20D - I got it when all I had was the lowly DS, and used it this weekend on my 20+ year old P3.

What for? I thought I bought all these lenses to cover my deficiency in photography skills. Maybe you are a collector then?

I think Wendy still doesn't get it I'm 99.99999% sure her lenses actually say A 1:2 (aka f/2). Perhaps the dot on top got rubbed off, but they are still f/2.0 lenses

I'm totally baffled by how this discussion is going. Like Betsypdx and roentarre, If that wasn't a typo, having 11 (Eleven) that's one more than ten and one less than 12 or XI in Roman Numerals. Then that borders on nuts. Must have meant 11 SMC A 50mm f1:2's

I can see having a spare of a great lens if you got it for $65.00 as a "just in case" but 11???? I'd like to see all 11 in the same pic. If you do have 11x 1:2's then why?? and if there's 11x 1.2's then sell some to us...please....

Most of the A 1.2's (F2) have been acquired either by really good bargains (like body and lens for under 20 dollars) or by gift from other members of my local Pentax users club.

I'm sorry. I am rarely rude to someone I don't know but I don't believe you at all. Either your Pentax users club is a room full of mental patients that have $500-700 to throw away just 'cause. Or you don't own what you say you do.

This was a relatively rare lens even when new and it was expensive. It's not the usual thing to find at estate sales anywhere that often. But if I'm wrong I'll happily apologize and eat my words.

PLEASE STOP GETTING 1.2 AND 1:2 CONFUSED! (ok, I'll stop yelling)....Folks who are NEW to Pentax/lenses have been confused by this, and your consistently calling your f/2.0 lenses A 1.2 only perpetuates the confusion/misunderstandings.

It may seem like a minor distinction, but like myself and others have tried explaining to you, it really is a BIG distinction. Unless you actually have f/1.2 lenses (which would totally contradict the entire point of this thread)
