Lens Designation Question

What do the letters M,F S etc. mean in the lens desaignation or description?

i.e. S 50 1.8

There is no such thing as S in Pentax lens, unless it refers to screwmount (m42).

The only S in a Pentax lens name would be in the SMC meaning Super Multi Coated, or the XS in the new XS series.

The new DA 50 1.8 also has SP Super Protect coating on the front element.

Although not common it might also refer to screw mount, but that is normally referred to as U for universal (as tamron note it) or M42 as the definition of the thread

Never heard of "S 50 1.8", unless it's either non-Pentax or you made it up.

Within their Z* range, Cosina-Zeiss use S for the M42 mount, as in ZS 35 f/2.
