Old Lens Question---Takumar

I have the opportunity to travel around a lot for work... I recently while killing time in a strange city went into a pawn shop...

The shop owner had an old old camera with a screw mount 50mm macro Takumar lens.

I tested it out as much as possible and I determined the lens would be 'useable'...it had oil all over the mount and the aperture blades were rusty but they worked fine.

He wanted $50 for it but I didn't go for it...mainly because I had no use for the lens and plus I wasn't into it or informed on it. The guy was selling it as an 'antique' so if I want it I can go get it... the optics I would classify as 'so so' because it had dust on it....

I passed on that buy...but if I want it I can go back tomorrow and get it possibly.

HOWEVER....I saw a SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1:1.7.

I paid $10.

Front and rear caps. MINT condition.

I came back to my hotel and put it on the camera and it works beautifully. It was in a case and had obviously been taken care of.

I knew the value of those... I have been looking at those...so I just offered something. I probably could have gotten it for $5 but I just threw it out there..."$10"

I did good...

I don't know anything about those old old lenses though so I shy'ed away from it...

What F stop and which version? - check out the review section on this forum and see what it would be worth to you if it were an smc 50mm F1.4 or or maybe an F4 Macro takumar or similar. Some of these have quite high resale values.

Now that you have the more modern version it just may not be worth the hassle.

It was a takumar f4 50mm macro.

He also had a f1.4 50mm but it was beat up bad.

This smc a 1.7 was a great deal. Had it half an hour for $10 and its pretty good!!!!

Well I would think about that very carefully - if it is a preset (two aperture rings) lens it will get you down to 1:1 macro and the resale on those is closer to $120. They are very good lenses and are fully manual for aperture for macro anyway. If not a preset then you get 1:2 macro - perhaps Macro is not your thing then forgetabout it.

Put the two prices together and you've averaged $30 a lens...
