A 16 or 18mm lens makes it pretty difficult but does anyone think the new lens will be Full frame? There may not be a FF coming for a couple years but if they even want the option, don't they need a standard zoom covering at least 24-50?

For that reason, could it be something like a full frame 19-75... 2.8-3.5

It's put down as DA* not as DFA* so no, not full frame.

I think a replacement will eventually come down the line but not in the near future. The lens on the roadmap will probably be an f/4 or variable aperture.

I'm hoping they designated it a DA instead of DFA just in case they were still hesitant about an FF. Hopefully with the rumoured launch of the FF, the lens turns out to be FF compatible.

Theres apparently a replacement coming, probably next year, with a different focal lenght range. Approximately 18-80; speed unknown but it is a DA* lens.
It doesn't look like it will be a replacement (as it almost certainly won't be an f2.8 lens); an additional choice, rather than a replacement.

It is a misunderstood.Nobody ever said a replacement of DA*16-50 is coming.
The New DA* is like Canon or Nikon 16-85mm line.I hope it comes with close to optical quality of DA*16-50.Believe me, DA*16-50/2.8 has very superior optical quality if you got a "good" copy.

There's a 100% corner crop from my copy with no sharpening added in PP and with lens distortion correction added in LR4. Not nearly as sharp as the centre, but it's more than sharp enough for me.

That's about as sharp as mine. More then acceptable for professional use. But maybe not enough for some pixel peepers.

I agree with the last two posters; the DA*16-50 is an outstanding lens. For those who take photos, rather than obsess about bench testing, a replacement is not needed.

Same as me but this is wide open, when you stop down to f/4 ~ f/5.6 then you're right in the zone.

I think that's suggested indeed.
If it's a replacement then the DA*16-50 would go out of production right, beeside that if you think about it a DA*18-85 f/4ish can't replace a DA*16-50 f/2.8 two very different lenses.

It's like the DA*60-250 replacing the DA*50-135 which isn't the case either.

We don't know the focal lenght range precisely or the speed. It could be 16-80/2.8.
