Updated version of DA*16-50 coming?

I was updating my profile on PPG, adding the newly acquired DA*16-50 to it. And there were 2 of them in the drop-down list to select!

One SDM (which I selected) and another Da*16-50 AL [IF] without SDM designation. It could be a mistake, but I found no other mistake like this in the list of cameras and lenses. It could be sign of a cheaper screw driven (or DC motor drive) DA*16-50 coming soon?

I don't care as I really like my classic 16-50 a lot, the lens performance is superb. But I thought others may be interested.
What do you think, is it an error in the database, or is a cheaper alternative coming?

probably an error in the database ... why should the webdesigners know of future lenses?

Theres apparently a replacement coming, probably next year, with a different focal lenght range. Approximately 18-80; speed unknown but it is a DA* lens.

It's the same for the 50-135, but if you use the camera/lens search on the front page, you get a lot of hits for the "non-SDM" version, so it's definitely not a secret lens used only by beta testers

How can that be a replacement?

For the 17-70 SDM.

I've seen those rumors too, but it doesn't really sound like a replacement to me. It seems unlikely that this would be an f/2.8 lens. Because if that's possible, why doesn't Canon or Nikon (or any other lens manufacturer) offer such a lens already? And if it is f/2.8, it would be one expensive lens. I think it's more likely to be a constant f/4, maybe a little faster, or a variable-aperture lens. In which case, again, I would not consider it a replacement for the 16-50.

On-topic: I think an updated 16-50 with a successor to SDM would be a good thing.

That's not a rumour, it's a planned (for 2013) lens; however as Pal said we don't know yet the precise focal length range, nor the speed. It's a DA* though, so it could be f/2.8.

While they are at it, I hope they come up with a different and improved optical formula, as it is not the sharpest lens out there at wider apertures.

I'd have to disagree, it's very sharp in the centre at f/2.8. And if you focus on the corners instead of focus and recompose then the corners are surprisingly sharp too, but yeah they're a tad soft at 16mm. I wouldn't say it's in need of a replacement though, I think the new DA* will be something more along the lines of the 17-70. I doubt it'd be f/2.8 but if it was that'd definitely be something to shout about. It'd be huge though.

Canon make a 15-85mm, though it's not fixed aperture. Perhaps Pentax will release something similar?

Whatever it is, if it replaces the 17-70, it'll have to be special in some way other than just being a DA* lens. If it's the same focal range and aperture, why buy it? The 17-70 is a great lens as it is.

Either you got lucky, or that I got extremely unlucky in that mine were crappy copies, and went through three of them (although the second one wasn't so bad except SDM was crap), so I gave up and got my money back. I am not a big fan.

On the other hand, I find 50-135 superb. In fact probably one of Pentax best ever zoom lenses, and I kept it despite the fact that SDM is busted . . .

This is absolutely true - if zooms could be made f2.8 while having almost 5 times zoom, then they would be, Canon would surely have made something like a 24-120 f2.8 for full frame - but alas it seems like it's not possible, since the two largest zoom ranges I've heard of being f2.8 are the DA 16-50* and the Nikon and Canon 17-55 f2.8s, both of which are meant to be not-that-amazing.
I really hope that ONE day we will figure out a 16-100 f2.8 or some such beautiful thing, but right now, even if it DID exist it would literally be 3kg and the size of a 300 f2.8 (fatter but not as long) and it would cost about $6000.

The planned 16-80 or so, IMHO, will be f3.5 - 4.5, and even that's reasonably impressive.

You are right that the lens itself is not a rumor. However the theory that it will replace the 16-50 is.

Wow that sucks I guess I got lucky then. And yeah the 50-135 is beautiful, they make a great pair (if you find good copies) and handle like a dream.

Could it be something like the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4? That'd be pretty cool.

I guess I'm a super++ lucky one with sharp corners at f2.8 and 16mm.
