Mirror lens for macro - SR and ISO limits - samples

There are several threads on the mflenses forums about using mirror lenses for macro work, long working distance and ring bokeh.
I spent time with K5, using it with Tamron 500/8 55BB and tele converter 2x 200F, which effectively becomes 1000mm (on 1.5x crop sensor = 1500mm)
The combo is not as sharp as my macro lenses or normal lenses with tubes/bellow. DOF is razor thin. Macro 1:1.5 with the tc 2x (without 1:3.0). MFD=170cm.

The K5 is an awesome body

SR activate set to 800mm (as max), hand-held except #4, iso 10000-20000, 1/800s - 1/2500s.
I tried without SR even at 1/2000s, the results were far more worse. Hard enough with tripod. I also learn to follow my heart beats when shooting these.
Another note is high ISO performance of the K5. The photos are noisy, but usable, compromise for the long working distance.

What else options do I have for the long working distance, macro alike?

#1 - distance 200cm

#2 - MFD 170cm

#3 - MFD 170cm

#4 - 250cm tripod

#5 - 400cm

#6 - 240cm

#7 - 400cm

#8 - 5-6m

#9 - 300cm

#10 - 350cm

#11 - 250cm

Haha... I love that big ant, from 2 meters!

Impressive for handheld on a 1000mm "macro." Might try putting my Tokina 500/8 on some extension tubes to lower the MFD and see what I get.

Nice proof-of-concept shots!

I have two mirrors, Sakar 500/8 and Rubinar Makpo 1000/10, both of which can be called 'macro' (especially the Rubinar) because their near-focus is 1.5m. I had not thought to put them on extension -- but I should have, given my long-ago fun.

Back in the day, I had an Olympus Pen-FT (half-frame 135 SLR, frame about the same size as APS-C) and a generic T2 400/6.3 long lens, and an M42 bellows, and a 2x TC, and a shoulder stock. I put all those together into a unit for shooting closeups of live rattlesnakes in the field from a safe distance, like 3-4m.

Yes, I should try shooting handheld macros with the Rubinar. I just need to mod my newer shoulder stock so its trigger will work the shutter of my K20D.

Sometimes I use a similar setup, same lens, 01F 2X TC or 01F with glass elements removed, but to keep noise and motion to a minimum on my K-7, I use a big handle-mount flash (AF400T) and set ISO at 100 or 200. It works quite well although it is a bit bulky.

200F is the model name of the tele converter. Ref adaptall-2.org SP lenses. It is known to be hard to find. There are no record how many were made, but i have seen this tc having serial starting with 4000xxx, 5000xxx and 6000xxx. My copy has 6000xxx. It was bundled with a tamron adaptall sp 300/2.8 model 60B. The seller let me keep the tc.
