To Buy or Not to buy?/

I have a Pentax K-5...I have just recetly purchased the pentax DA* 50-135 lens and it has been wonderful! I had just about decided to go ahead and purchase the Pentax DA* 16-50 until I read alot of really scary reviews on that lens. Could someone who has this combination of camera and lens please tell me how it's working for you? I just can't afford a $12,000.00 lens if the camera and lens don't get along or if the lens itself still has a big issue regarding the SMC Motor breaking and all that other nightmare stuff I read... Thanks!

Have you seen our comparative review of the 16-50mm?

DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Introduction - PentaxForums.com

If you're willing to give up the weather sealing, there's a cheaper, sharper, and more reliable alternative out there

I cannot agree with Adam. My DA* 16-50 is absolutely flawless piece of optics. The contrast and sharpness achieved outclasses both copies of Tamron 17-50 I had chance to try.
I sincerely regret that I haven't bought it earlier (also scared by the repetitive complaint on the intenet).

Adam, no offense, but even though the DA* you used for comparison is not as sharp as mine, you still did not judge it fair.

My DA*16-50 has been optically and mechanically sound for three years. I dropped it once from waist height onto a hardwood floor which seized the zoom ring...but was fixed and that was two months after I got it.

It is a fantastic lens, worth every penny.

I love my DA*16-50 probably my most used lens overall. It is very good but to be honest the reviews of the Tamron and Sigma 17-50s show them to be very close, so close I think that individual lens variability will tell the winner in any particular test.

Not sure if that's a typo but it's not that much. B&H shows it at $1,100 right now. The big differences are price, weather sealing, Pentax name on the lens. I bought mine when the price was much lower, so it was no contest, the sealing and Pentax brand were easily worth the price premium to me. At current prices, I am not so sure. I think right now the price premium outweighs the advantages for me and if I were buying now would look very hard at the alternatives. I still give the 16-50 extra value (Pentax name, sealing and having a matched set 16-50 & 50-135) just not sure if that value is enough to cover the price difference. But only you can decide that...

Come on, if you have 12 grand to spend you should really consider the 645D .
