On topic, I think I'll be getting this lens one of these days. Dare I tell everyone tho, because I have an extra 1.7x AF TC and I personally love matching that with old fast 50s? Problem is tho with this lens starting @ 58mm, it gives me close to 100mm. If I then consider the performance I'll get from the lens + TC vs. say a FA 100/2.8 Macro, it's not that 'smart' a decision.
Yes, I will. Only not to offend too many people by posting it.

I just want to say that 1.7X TC turns bokeh bad in general. With bright days, the background bokeh turns harsh, dry and powdery. I might try this combo out again but I am afraid Nokton characteristic might be compromised because of the 1.7X tele

Nothing special but these two shots demonstrate that the Nokton can get the 'bigger picture' as well...
Nice examples. I know a lot of folk discard sharpness tests on web sized shots - and truthfully its impossible to really see the detail - but when its a good sharp lens, that comes through even on the reasonably reduced sizes, such as these.

A soft lens at this size wouldn't appear as crisp in fine details such as leaves and balcony railings, which are a well rendered here.

Or perhaps its just because I've seen enough RAW data off the Nokton to agree completely, heh.

There is not much diffraction from this lens that I shot this with aperture f16, it is still sharp as razor blades.

This lens is rather addictive.

However, I have read somewhere that Topcor 58mm f1.4 (the original lens) has much better contrast and background bokeh than Nokton.

I wonder why Mike Johnston is "virtually allergic" to it.

The Topcor is very rare and only exists in M42, right?

Mike Johnston virtually allergic

Wish he stated why, that page is one heck of a good read.

I think Mike is referring to the Nokton 50/1.5 rangefinder lens (see Cameraquest: Voigtlander Lenses Leica Mount about 4/5 of the way down the page) rather than the new Nokton 50/1.4 SLII SLR lens.

This is correct. He wrote that piece in 2002, long before the SLII lens.

Slightly off topic but interesting. I am reading a series of books at the moment that are set in England in the 1870's and 1880's. One of main characters in the series is a photographer and the equipment he uses? I'll give you a clue, it begins with V.
