Maybe I should buy a fisheye!
In my experience I've not ran into any sharpness issues unless wide open, but stopped down just a small bit takes care of that. It does have some edge distortion, especially at the wide end, but again, that's to be expected.

My recommendation is based upon my experience in San Fran and in the grand canyon and surrounding area.

For cities, I find the kit lens too long, and would definitely go for a wider lens, the sigma 10-20 F4-5.6 is what I have. This also lets you get creative with some landscape shots, however, once out in the open, you will more than likely favor a longer lens.

Thanks all, some great thoughts so far.

So you'll be pleased to know I've bought a Tamron from TopQuark on these very forums, which has saved me a few $$$. Therefore I continue to consider my UWA options, prior to my USA trip later this year.

One lens I hadn't considered before is the Sigma 8-16mm - just investigating now how that stacks up.

Hi All,

Just FYI I've just laid down the cash on a Sigma 8-16mm, having checked the reviews the performance outstrips the 10-20mm

Got a good deal on it to, 399!

Now I just need Pentax to get some K-30s into stock!

You'll be really happy you have the wide angle in the American West. Congrats on the purchase and have a great trip!

Good choice. remember to cover the lens whenever you move aboutwhile not shooting. The front element is quite bulbous.
