sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG Aspherical

I have the non-hsm version of this lens but no macro designation ,I have been taking really close up shots with it. Is this lens a macro lens? I remember seeing a post here on the forum but for the life of me i can't find it.

the lens is not a macro lens. For pentax mount, there is no such thing as a macro zoom lens. typically, the term macro is used as a marketing term to mean close-focusing, but a true macro lens is one that can attain 1:1 magnification or greater. However, you can get it to focus to 1:1 macro by throwing on some extension tubes

so even if Dpreview refers to this lens as a macro lens , see below link

Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro: Digital Photography Review

For close photography it's not a true macro?

Thats marketing. It's not TRUE macro, it should be called close up, or something like that. True macro should be close to 1:1, this lens does only 1:4

DPR just copies the 'official' description of the lens. They also did provide the maximum magnification (0.26x) which is close to the earlier mentioned 1:4.

So no, it's not a macro lens. As RioRico often states, it saves them a little on the cost of ink compared to the term 'close focusing' (and similar)
