It's still en route from China.

I just ordered a 49-28mm stepdown ring on ebay for my F28 f2.8. The only 28mm lens caps that I'm finding are push-on caps. Any suggestions?

Step down to a diameter for which you can find a useable cap?

Has anyone tried cutting the hole or a rectilinear shape from a lens cap?

Just a thought

I have a standard 49mm rubber hood on my FA 28mm now and a 49-28 step-down on order. I tried the DA 40mm hood and it vignetted noticeably.
I received the 49-28mm step-down adapter today. It vignettes in the corners on the FA 28mm. It does not vignette on the FA 50 f1.4, FA 35 f2, DA 40mm Ltd, or the D FA 100mm macro. The 49-28mm adapter does not provide as much shade as the Pentax petal hood for the FA 35 or the rectangular hood for the FA 50, but is a tiny bit more closed in than the metal hood supplied with the DA 40.

I dont' know how it will work yet, but if it vignettes I intend to file away the corners.
I'm not going to file it down. I can use it with the compatible lenses once in a while, for its compact size.

It vignettes (...) on the D FA 100mm macro.
Is this the WR version, or the one with aperture ring?

I briefly tried 49-28 on the WR version, and didn't find it vignetting. The lens is currently in Eric's shop so I can't test it.

I'm glad you asked about this, because I redid my test. The lens is a D FA with aperture ring. I don't see classic vignetting, but the whole frame is a little darker with the hood attached. It looks like I was seeing veiling flare in the shot with no hood, and the hood added enough contrast that the image darkened noticeably. I retract my previous statement, the 49-28 adapter works well on the D FA 100. I will edit my post above with this correction so as not to mislead anyone. I may leave the adapter on this lens for macros, it provides better protection at macro distances than the Pentax hood. Thanks SOldBear.

I use the Pentax MH-RA 49mm lens hood on my A 28 2.0. It's the dedicated hood of the FA 43 1.9. On APS-C, there is some vignetting even without the hood. With the hood on, the vignetting looks about the same. So I guess the hood is perfect on APS-C. The hood is aluminum with felt inner padding. Really good build. Looks like they're made for each other. Wish I had a cap to go with it.
