Dream Team of lenses

Everyone has heard of the dream team of basketball fame...

I want to know your dream team of lenses...

Today I recieved my replacement lens for (in my opinion) a crappy kit lens... I got a Tamaron 17-50mm... at first glance its been great.

I have a small collection of lenses already...but I am looking for a list of lenses (pentax or 3rd party) that just stand out in their class.

For example the lens I recieved today I looked at all the reviews first before I bought it and I would just be another voice in the echo chamber now telling how good it is...

Now here are the lens classes:

Ultra wide zoom

standard zoom

prime 50mm

prime 85mm

Telephoto zoom...what would be a good replacement (upgrade) for the Pentax 50-300mm for example?

Just one or two lenses in each category....price wise the lenses listed should be a good bang for the buck. You can add more categories but I am wanting a list of the best of class/bang for the buck....

Few more suggestions:
UWA - Sigma 10-20mm f4.0-5.6
Standard Zoom - Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5(or 4.0)
85mm Prime - Samyang 85mm f1.4 (its MF though)

Can vouch for DA* 50-135mm it really is top notch.

Pentax: I love the 15mm Limited, 35mm Limited, 40mm Limited. I like the 31mm Limited but it's too expensive for what it does, for me to justify it.

Tamron: I love the 70-200.

Sigma: The 8-16 is quite good. Very large compared to 15mm and far more flare, even at comparable setting. That said... it's an 8 mm.

I work in kits
  • Walkaround and landscapes FA31Ltd and DFA100WR (complete)
  • Wildlife FA31Ltd and DA55-300 (complete); I can dream about a 70-200/2.8 with an 1.4x optional converter and possibly the new 560mm but it's all low on the list
  • City / architecture DA12-24, DA40 and DFA100WR; for now, I'll have to use the 18-55 to replace the first two so I dream about DA12-24 and DA40 and the first one is quite high on the list

My current kit:

Ultra wide zoom: DA 12-24/4

Standard zoom: DA* 16-50/2.8 - I don't use it such these days....

Standard primes: DA*40/2.8, DA* 55/1.4

Tele primes: DA*70/2.4, DFA 100/2.8 Macro WR, DA* 300/4

Tele zoom: DA* 50-135/2.8

... Had the DA 18-135 and sold it. Now looking at a DA* 60-250/4. or the DA* 200/2.8. Choosing between the two is agony.

I will just make a comment about primes I recommend. I own the FA 31, DA *55, FA 77, and D FA 100 mm WR. I feel like this is pretty good prime spacing and covers most of my needs. At some point, getting a longer prime (probably DA *200) and a wider one (DA 15 limited?) will probably finish things off from a prime standpoint.

Zooms are a different story. I would just say that if fast focusing is important, than going with Sigma's HSM lenses is probably worthwhile, since Pentax DA * lenses, while excellent optically, suffer somewhat with regard to slowish focusing (due to SDM).

Wide 'zoom' = Sigma 15/2.8 fisheye: wide enough for me, and faster than zooms
Standard Zoom = DA18-55WR: plenty good enough, compact light & WR
50mm Prime = Sigma 50/2.8 macro: I tried many fifties until I settled here!
85mm 'Prime' = only my Rikenon XR 70-150/4: prime-like quality but more versatile
Telezoom: DA 55-300 is still my choice, I cannot bring myself to lug something larger

And best overall bang/buck would be my $30 Rikenon 28. I think this lens has the most keepers per shot.

Ultra wide zoom: Pentax DA 10-17; Sigma 8-16

standard zoom: Pentax DA 16-45; Pentax FA 24-90

prime 50mm: Pentax K 50/1.2

prime 85mm: Pentax K 85/2.2 Soft Focus

One's "dream team" of lenses greatly depends on what you shoot. I use zoom lenses almost exclusively for landscapes, so I want the very best "slow" zooms I can find. That's why I don't include an f2.8 zooms my list.

I'm in the process of shuffling my kit, the goal of the following good AF walk around for September is my DA14, DA21,DA35, DA50 FA77 ... and i'm selling off a bunch of stuff to fund it. Really i just need to fund the 21 and 77, and if i had to choose I'd leave the 21 off my list for now. Longer than 77 I don't really use much and will keep some Manual lenses for when i do need them (M100 and M200) and for rendering I will keep all my taks (and likely add some to offset the k mount I am selling)

I am not really a zoom guy and much prefer small good primes

Now here are the lens classes:

Ultra wide zoom: DA 14mm/f2.8

standard zoom: none

prime 50mm: DA*55mm/f1.4 or the new DA50mm/f1.8

prime 85mm: FA*85mm/f1.4

Telephoto zoom: DA*60-250mm

Well it's not all about bang-for-the-buck, but sometimes a matter of making a plan to collectc those nice tools over the coming years.
