what should i replace my smc fa 50mm f1,4 with

so i have been looking around at a few lenses, more specifically the fa43, fa77 and the da55. but im not sure witch way to go, and maybe there are other lenses out there you guys think i should choose.

heres my equipment when considering alternatives.

k-7, samyang 8mm, smc fa 50 f1.4, helios 58 f2, sigma 70-300.

the 50mm has been my standard lens for a long time, but i find im tempted by the FAs. my thoughts are that maybe the 43 is more versatile as a primary lens then the 77, and could just use the helios for portraits if needed.

ps the shitty sigma 70-300 is just cause im out camping allot and needed a cheap zoom.

You have a very logical plan here. I will keep the FA50/1.4 and replace the Halios with FA77 if you are more a portrait/tele shooter or the FA43 if you are more a landscape/party shooter. IMHO, any f/1.4 lens is too precious to let go unless there is a financial reason.

What do you want to shoot that you can't? Or are you simply seeking better performace? If so, what is lacking in the FA50?

you have a big gap between 8mm and 50mm! do you want a prime or zoom for that range? do you need fast lenses? what is your budget? these are all important considerations.

Your line-up (k-7, samyang 8mm, smc fa 50 f1.4, helios 58 f2, sigma 70-300) lacks something about 18 to 40 mm. A nice lens is the FA31mm f1.8, if you have the finances.

I have also a K-7 and the FA31mm is a great prime with outstanding IQ which works very nicely with the K-7.

Hope that the suggestion may help.

The little Sigma 30/1.4 is a nice lens which can be found for not a lot of cash.
If you Camp a lot, the DA55/1.4 is WR and has Quickshift focus collar, ( I really like quickshift on my Pentax Macros and DA* zooms) Could be handy.

The FA50/1.4 is a fantastic lens, especially from f/1.8. I'd keep it and add a new lens rather than replace it.

I'd suggest a FA31 or a Sigma 30/1.4 if you want shorter, or maybe a DFA100 macro if you want longer. You want a decent focal length gap between your FA50 and the next lens, otherwise I'd suggest the FA77 for a longer option.

ok so ill just answer you guys in on post.

MJL: no need to replace halios, cost 20$ so wont get no money for it, might as well keep it.

alphanerd: im out looking for performance. but if you guys think the fa 50 1.4 is enough then ok. just the reviews on here give a better score to the 43 and 77.

seventysixersfan: the lenses i mention all cost about the same (some ebay some new). i got the kit lens as well (18-55 wr) but forgot about it since i dont use it. i never really considered a lens between 8 and 50 since i dont feel i need it (enthusiast photographer at best). but maybe the sigma 30 at a later point. dont need to fast a lens.

hcc: ill look at it. but the 31 seems to be the most expensive of the three (31-43-77) and should it be my first buy of the bunch?

cmohr: dont know anything about quick shift (need to leave for work soon so no time for google) but WR is never a bad thing

twitch: my thoughts where to sell it and replace it with some thing better, an upgrade if you will. cause it would go along way financing a fa43/fa77/da55. but maybe i shouldn't?

FA31Ltd is the only one you need I only have the FA31Ltd of the set and it lives 95% or so of the time on my camera.

Seriously, it depends on your needs what you want to buy first. FA31Ltd will be a better addition to FA50 than FA43Ltd and for me FA31Ltd is even the better option for a single lens solution than FA43Ltd. FA43Ltd might be better (for you) if you want to replace the 50mm as you seem to like the FOV of 50mm.

The FA31mm is my most used prime lens and one of the best lens investments that I ever made. It pairs very, very nicely with the K-7 body and you will not regret it IMHO.

Yes I would buy the FA31mm first, the FA77mm next. At least that my opinion as a K-7 user...
