I have both the Pentax-A 28mm F2.8 and the M F3.5.

Some samples of the Pentax-A: Flickr Search: smcpentaxa28mmf28 (I paid about 70€ for it)
Some samples of the Pentax-M: Flickr Search: smcpentaxm28mmf35 (got it for 20€)

I prefer using the A-version because of the A-setting but, honestly, the M F3.5 is sharper and has a bigger impact. The A F2.8 is a bit "flat" though this can easily be fixed in post, but if you just like to shoot JPG, go for the M-version.
The one major drawback with the M F3.5, atleast on my copy, is is how everything falls apart at infinity. It's just not sharp but I suspect that this is just a flaw in my copy.

It seems like there have been 500 28mm lenses made for the K mount. I'm wondering which ones are the best, factoring in price/rarity. I have a shot at picking up a Pentax-A 28 2.8 for around $75 in nearly perfect condition but I'm not sure if I'd be better off with another version of the 28mm.

What are the pros and cons of all the various types of 28mm, and how much do they typically go for?
I have the both the M 28/3.5 and the K 28/3.5. Yes a bit of silly LBA there ... They are both great, and I have not found any issues with either at infinity (one problem referred to in an earlier posting). The M is smaller and lighter, the k seems slightly punchier to me, and seems a bit better at the edges. But really there's not a lot between them. I used to have the FA28/2.8, which was great from f/5.6 onwards but rather soft wide open. My impression is that both the older lenses are better in this respect. I use catchi-in-focus all the time with them - works fine.
