FA 77 and K200D Compatibility Issues?

Hello-

Has anyone experienced or heard of the problem of the K200D not recognizing or working with the FA
77? When I put mine on I get gibberish on the LCD and nothing in the viewfinder. Camera works fine with my other lenses.

Thanks for any insight.

Do you have access to another K-mount DSLR or K-01 you could try the lens on?

I'd also suggest cleaning the lens contacts,
but don't know why the viewfinder should be dark.
Did the lens rotate fully in to the mount?
(If it didn't, that might also account for the LCD gibberish.)

The lens is essentially unused, contacts are clean. LCD flashes: F--, along with the available photo count.

So does the lens seat properly, and does the mount lock button click out like it should?

What is your aperture ring set to? Is it set to "A" ? If it is not, then the camera will not be able to communicate with it. Also you should enable the camera to function when the camera is not set to "A" i.e. in the custom menu "Using Aperture Ring - Permitted" Try that first.

So to summarize set your lens aperture to "A" which will require you to press down on the metal button and rotate the aperture ring all the way to the left.

P.s. enjoy one of the best prime lenses you'll have :-) I have one and that only led to the acquisition of the FA 31 as well... :-)

OK, but different aperture ring settings (and different mode dial settings) wouldn't account for "nothing in the viewfinder."
Is the viewfinder image just dark, rather than totally blank?

Well I interpreted the "nothing in the viewfinder" as "I don't see any of the info light up on the bottom of the viewfinder". The OP stated that their other lenses work fine, so I figure that the mirror and the physical condition of the camera is good. It is highly improbable that the optical viewfinder would be black, as that would mean that something is obscuring light from the lens going to the mirror, unless the OP forgot to take off the lens cap. Other than that it would mean that the mirror return mechanism on the camera is broken. If the camera was a Sony Nex 7 or an Oly OM-D, I could understand a black viewfinder :-P

Oh when the OP mentioned that the "LCD is flashing F--" it says that the camera is not able to detect the aperture setting, so the aperture ring is not set on "A" or it is a Pentax K or M lens and the camera's custom function of "using the aperture ring" is set to the factory default which is "prohibited." I had a similar experience like that in August of 2009... which lead me join the forum :-)

Hopefully the OP can clarify what is or isn't visible in the viewfinder.

Thanks all, you and this forum are, as always, great. I set the ring to A and all is good, except I feel a little dense for not knowing that.

Sorry I wasn't more clear re the viewfinder. I did mean there was no information displayed, not that it was dark.

Thanks again.

No problem Biff :-) it happens to us all. My FA lenses have moved out of the "A" position before while in transport. Just make sure you change that custom menu setting to "permit" for the aperture ring :-) so that way when you use a manual lens it works fine :-)
