Sometimes you get a lemon lens. I've used the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 on all 4 mounts and maybe I was lucky but had no real problems with AF. Exception being the K-r which has it's well known AF problems In some situations.

A good copy is sharp at f2.8 from the wide end to 50mm and you can use it without hesitation at that aperture. The 16-50mm f2.8 isn't a bad lens either, but it cannot match the Tamron for sharpness and yes lovely build and all it's a massive price too.

I suggest most focus problems are down to the body, the K-r, K-7, K-5 and older bodies are known to have AF issues and quite significant ones too, newer bodies should be better here.

There is no love hate with Tamron you have the "Holy Trinity" of Tamron's 17-50mm f2.8, 90mm f2.8 macro and 70-200mm f2.8
If you don't need sealing these 3 lenses blow away anything Pentax have to offer "at this price point"

The Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 is quite good, but it's not really 17mm at the wide end, and it's nowhere near as sharp as the Tamron on the edges

One of my favorite lenses. I often wonder why I bother with primes. Beyond its sharpness, it seems to produce really nice punchy colors.

I have sigma 30, da 40, fa50 and they are only marginally better than tamron 17-50. There is very little difference in sharpness and colors but not enough reason in most cases to change lens all time.

My old m50s are about same IQ as tamron 17-50. My tammy 17-50 is even better than my 28mm f2.8.

But if need aperture biffer than f2.8 or know that is going to use same focal lenght all time then sometimes I choose fa50 or sigma 30 than tamron...IF i have them with me.

Tammy 90mm i like so much too. I also have 28-75&18-200 tamrons. I admit i mostly use tamron brand lenses much more than others. but 70-200 tammy i not have cos its too heavy for my usege, even its more lightweght that its direct competitors.
