Thanks Sandy! That really shows off the difference. I think the DA300 is in the cards for me. I highly appreciate your post.

Interestingly, the DA*300 also gives much better macro performance than my supposedly "Macro" Sigma EXII 70-200/2.8.

It does. It's a great lens for Dragonflies and Butterflies etc. Unfortunately yesterday the SDM on my DA*300 stopped - not a peep, no warning, just dead. This is the first time I have ever heard of it happening to a DA*300 which until now has seemed to be bullet-prove.

Dropped it off today - it will take quite a while (5-6 weeks) to get it back they forecast and cost me ca. US$300 to have it repaired (it is just out of warranty). So now I'm down to the Tokina 300/2.8 (doesn't seem to work well with TCs) or the SMC 300/4 (pretty old and pretty heavy) !

I'm now giving serious consideration to a D800E and a used Sigma 500/4.5 I spied in one of the shops in the camera mall today. Sell off the DA*300, and one of my K5s, after the lens is repaired and a new SDM inserted.

Same here Kevin - the switch stress'er for me is getting used great Sigma glass at 25~50% cheaper than the pentax mount ones plus great availability.

The DA*50-135 actually gives you a little more magnification than the DA*60-250; it's so little that it can actually be ignored (both are around 1:6). Check the specs. DA*300 gives a bit more magnification (1:4). Your limitation is actually the minimum focusing distance of those lenses, not the focal length.

If you really want closeups indoors, get a macro lens 1:1 magnification at short distance (DFA100WR, 30cm) to very short distance (DA35Ltd, 14cm).
It is funny you mention this. I sometimes will use the Kenko AF 25mm extension tube with my DA* 300 to get closer focusing. It retains af but of course it isn't weather sealed.

How old is your 300. I got an extended 3 year warranty with mine when I bought it but it expires this coming January.

Unfortunately in China they only give 1 year guarantees - and there's no such thing as buying extended warranties

I buy all my Pentax gear from the same store - and the owner called me this evening and will work something out for me, which is damn nice of her, so I'll end up paying less than a US$100 for the repair, but it's still a bummer losing the lens for so long.

Yeah, they have a Sigma 500 and also a 300-800 (didn't ask the price on that one !) but at only US$3,000 for the 500mm that's a great deal as it's pristine and that's around US$2,000 off list.

Pentax only has a 1 year in the U.S.A. That is why I purchased the extended warranty. The repair price is probably 2.25x $100 here.
