Foiled again by the lack of wide primes.

Argh! I was in the mix for an A20mm f2.8 on E-bay just a moment ago. It ended up going for $512, which was more than I could afford.

Please, Lens God, bestow a wide angle prime in the 18-20mm range upon us for under $300.

May your prayer (to which I'd add, "Anything but another 50mm!") be answered.

The Samyangs go for around $400. I really hope they will make something in the 18-20 range. I am more interested in this lens for video than for stills, so their all manual design works for me. 14mm a bit wider than I'd like to go at this time.

I hope they don't announce like 3 more 50's (1.4, 1.2, 1.1), a couple more 35's, and a few more 40's before we get something moderately wide. Someone pointed out in another thread that 18mm is the wide end of some of the zooms, so you wouldn't think this would be an impossible lens to design.

Well, there's no UWA prime on the lens roadmap, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Hence the prayer.

kenafein, I'm not overly familiar with the Soligor. I should probably do some research. I do know I've had bad experiences with 3 out the 6 third party lenses I've bought. My Sigma 24 2.8 is not very nice, so I use it only as a last resort. My Ricoh 28mm was wonderful, but it was broken quite a while ago. My Sears 135mm f2.8 has never inspired me. My Vivitar 70-300 and Tamron 28-75 have both been great, whereas my Sigma 28-105 is pretty bad. I'm a little hesitant when it comes to 3rd party lenses, at least older ones. On the other hand, my Pentax lenses have all been great, except my DA 35.

I am over the 50s too. Why don't they just stop reinventing the wheel and release new copies of some of their old lenses (like the a20 2.8) as "limited editions"? If they looked at what is popular in the used market they could easily figure out which lenses are desired enough for a new production run, even if they aren't AF.

The Sigma 24/2.8 has an excellent reputation, and I loved mine. Maybe you got a bad copy. The Soligor is pretty rare and sought after. They made an A version and an M version. The A is even more rare. If you find one, and don't like it, it will be easy to resell. There is a thread with some samples on this site. It is also released under the brand Spiratone. You could also pick up a DA21/3.2 for ~400 used. That is an excellent lens. I know it's above your $300 requirement.

I'd post on a couple of the excellent MF forums and ask for suggestions - those guys seem to know every MF lens out there !

Or maybe PM Rio Rico on here for ideas - he has tried some weird and wacky lenses and may be able to offer up something new.

There have been a few Sigma 24mm lenses, so it may depend on which one we're talking about.

I've looked into all of the other lenses people are talking about. It looks likely that I'm going to have to go one of the routes. Unfortunately, I don't think any of them are going to be as satisfactory as an A20 2.8, based on reviews, but I guess that is the (completely unacceptable to me) price of using an aps-c system.

Only a Pentax APS-C system, maybe; but I think the DA 21 is an excellent replacement for the A20/2.8. I have a Sigma 19mm/2.8 for my NEX that is quite brilliant, and it costs only $199 new.
