I found a 27mm lens hood off Amazon for $5 bucks and decided try it out on my 40mm XS.

What do you guys think? Subtle enough for street photography or just plain fugly

To me atleast... That's real Fugly from the side.... But hey, if you like it, why not? ;D

fugly. Under what kind of lighting does the hood help with contrast? Direct sunlight?

Hoods are good. There's nearly no circumstance under which a hood isn't helpful.

Pretty cool. I'm sure it would attract at least some kind of attention when street shooting, not sure if the good type or bad type of attention. Since people are not used to seeing a rectangular hood, they might think it is just a cell phone or video camera, maybe give you a big smile.

Whats the word . . . . . . character, yeah thats it! I think its great since it was so cheap and since you are starting with a tortilla lens that looks like a body cap anyway, where else do you have to go but up!?

Fugly and funky! I was also thinking of hood options for my XS. I was think I might create a low profile hood (models after the 40ltd hood) using set-up/down rings. Although in all honesty, I have not found I needed a hood for my XS yet.

Pentax make a similar one for 50/1.4-1.7 and also a shorter one for 28/2.0

but on a 40XS.....
