Actually, someone does.

A monopod is your friend.

I had the 55-300 which has pretty good IQ (better than the similar Tamron or Sigma 70-300's) and is relatively small, then the Tamron 70-200 that has excellent IQ and is pretty heavy. When I got the Sigma 150-500, I dumped the 55-300 as it sort of became the odd man out.
But how fast is that 500mm? It sounds like its sort of a light hog....

If you were shooting full daylight it might be fine...but other than full light and how does it perform? I imagine your speeds couldn't exceed 1/100 at full zoom with a relatively high ISO...but thats just an educated guess...

It's f6.3 at 500. It cost $999. You can buy a Sigma 500 f4.5 for a lot more :-)

I mostly use a monopod, though I've hand-held it at airshows and elsewhere.

I have been very much considering getting the 50-500 or the 150 to 500... not sure... but when i didn't own a camera yet the long lenses looked very attractive to me... i was frothing over them... after shooting for a while though...I went the exact opposite. I like wide lenses...well I like a lot of things...

the big zooms would work for me here where I live because I am so far in the country... there isn't much to shoot but animals and birds (within about 50 to 100 miles) but even then I struggle to find what I feel are exciting subjects....

my photographer's artistic eye needs more training....
