Rokkor 58/1.4!

For portraits, the pose and light condition is going to make more of a difference than the lens you'll use.

58 1.4 is not the best rokkor, the better ones are 50 1.4 MD and 58 1.2 . Mamiya 55 1.8, ... better find 55 1.4 which is tomioka design and exists as many other brands like Rikenon, Tomioka, Porst, Auto Reflecta, ... and many others, some of them are MC. Other great lenses are those in my signature, CZJ Pancolar 50 1.8 MC(the bokeh is like helios 44 but the lens is much sharper and contrasty), Zenitar-M 50 1.7(very smooth render, great lens!), M 50 1.7 - Planar like bokeh, Helios 44-2 and 44-3 are almost the same because they both have 8 blade diaphragm, earlier helioses are even better if you can find one(not the 44M!!!) search for the preset versions. The older you get the better it will be.

My new Chinon 55mm 1:1.4 is a truly remarkable little lens. The more I use it the more I am impressed with it, and for the record I'm a Tak freak, and I have the 50 and 55, in M42 and K mount so it take a lot to impress me. Bokeh and color are really interesting. Lens is worth a buy if you see one, IMHO.

Just keep in mind that a lot of the 'character' nowadays gets lost in post processing, where the software automatically tries to make all images look.. balanced and normal.

Edit: Oh, and I have a Miranda 50mm f1.9 (or so the seller on ebay claimed, it has no text on the lens, apart from aperture and focus numbers), which is sharp, but also very low contrast. Creates some interesting images, especially wide open. And its K-mount, so no adapter needed.

It is one of the tomioka designed lenses but produced by chinon with a little tiny difference in the bokeh. So yes it is an option. Tomioka 55 1.4 is sharper than Takumar 50 1.4 wide open and the bokeh is swirly like biotar(helios). SMC Takumar 50 1.4 is more contrasty closed down but it is not always a good thing and some of the variations of the 55 1.4 have MC, like Rikenons for example.

You may want to look into the Volna-9 50/2.8 russian 1:2 macro. It's got character.

Pentacon 50 1.8, that's a lens with character, sharp as a razor in the centre, nice bokeh and bold colours. And it's cheap and plentiful.

The Chinon 50 1.7 has already been mentioned, another great and cheap lens, the Helios 44-2 and 44M, again they are great lenses. And don't discount the wonderful little Industar 50-2 either, that's cheap and cheerful.

I think the samples from any of the 50 1.2s could be what you really want, but I was also very happy with my K 55 f1.8, which rendered backgrounds in a rough but painterly way.
