Finally had a chance to test the lens on Monday. From F5.6 up its fine, sharp, good colour.F rom F4 to F2.8 its garbage.

Front focuses, bad colour and contrast, soft.

I'm under the 13 day return period so i should be ok.

Dam.

I have been considering this lens for some time now as a walk around lens. However, I keep seeing hints of QC issues. Is Tamron having a problem with this lens in particular? Kind of makes me gun shy. Anyone have any idea what Tamron is doing about this?

I've had no problems with my copy. Sharp as a tack, even at f/2.8.

All mine look like the front of the lens is smeared with a thin layer of vaseline. Very soft.

Send it back

This lens should be sharp, sharp, sharp, with nice bokeh.

Here is a shot at f2.8. I have shown the focus point. As you can see, the whole shot looks cloudy, and the large text is more or less in focus. To me this is pretty bad FF

This is surprising and of course a disappointment. Mine has been great from day 1 It's possible it was mishandled in shipping or something. Anyway I'd get it exchanged. It's well worth a second try.

Dave, sorry to hear about your bumout. However, I'd like to echo others in saying that my copy is simply wonderful. And it's a pretty good close focuser. Either you got a bad copy, or more likely imho, it got banged up a bit in transit. MY copy works great and I've been very pleased with it. You've seen some pretty good low light samples so I thought I'd show you the close up side of things. DS, f4.5 @ 1/750

Man ... what a shame.
It's a lens I'd like to get ... but not when i am broke.
It looks like it'd be a great lens ... if you get a good one.

Thanks all for the replies.

I'm sure its just a bad copy, as i say, from F 5.6 to 22 its fine, just the wideer ap's.

I have talked to the salesman, and i can bring it back, no problems. Only problem is that is the only one they had in stock at all. My show is Feb 23 and i was hoping to have it for then. I see the store has the Sigma 17-50 F2.8, which i may look into, or just take cash back or store credit to use against the Tamron 70-200 or Pentax 60-250.

Looks like its the 77 ltd for now, and the D2H and 70-210 on a mono.
