Will I damage my takumar with UV?

I found one of the common spotmatic/tak 1:1.4 50mm combo locally on Craigslist.

I got a darn good deal on it so im not too paranoid about damaging it but it has major yellowing in the rear element. I've read that exposing the lens to strong UV light will decrease or cure the yellowing however i was under the assumption that UV light damages lenses, hence the reason for UV filters...

Here is a comparison to show how severe the yellowing is.

Left image was taken with a 55mm takumar 1.8, and on the right is the 50/1.4

So am I going to damage my lens? How do you all cope with the yellowing, i personally like the patina in the picture above, but under different circumstances I think i will be annoyed.

UV filters are used because of the way UV light affects film, it doesn't hurt lenses, it actually is good for them because it will stop and prevent fungus growth too. Just don't let the lens get too hot or the lubricants will break down and leech into places they don't belong.

UV treatment is standard fair for yellow Takumars. Search and you will find many threads on the subject, some just put the lens on a windowsill and let natural UV fix it, others have used various UV lamps.

The window sill won't work if you have reasonably modern windows with their own UV coating.

I have a SMC Tak that is pretty yellowed when purchased. I placed it under the morning sun for abt half to an hour every weekend with windows open (the fierce heat from afternoon sun here may be too strong for the lens). The yellowing gradually clear and it is noticeable after about a month of gradual sunning.

UV will age plastics. There is not any plastics in that lens, just metal and glass. So no problem.
