Here's another two shots with the same ghosting and always deviated to the left!

Hi capt
I think they are difficult shots into bright sun with the zoom nearly wide open and the reflected parts are way over exposed, maybe reflection off sensor up to front glass and back down.
You could look at the histo.
You are f/5.8 on all shots, is that wide open?
Try to stop the lens down 2 stops and leave iso and shutter same.
Then in that light, right down to f/16 and increase shutter accordingly.

Did we get an answer as to what was causing this one????

I've never seen this with my 55-300 and I normally use it wide open or close to wide open (for Bird In Flight photos) even in bright sun.

I had a play with trying to reproduce this on Sunday with my 55-300 and couldn't do it.
The closest I got to seeing this sort of thing was by turning on multiple exposure mode - but then it resets to single exposure automatically after taking the shot, so it's not like you could be in multiple exposure by mistake.

If the lens is under warranty - take it to the shop where you bought it and show them the problem - maybe it's a problem specific to your lens?

Strange problem.
assuming no windows and filters.

If it happens also with non moving targets, then the lens is probably the cause.
Think of internal reflections of some kind.

If it only happens on moving targets, then it is more likely the camera.
is it movent direction related, can the ghost also be at the other side ?
Does it also happen in certain shooting modes, single shot, or only bursts (leaking shutter during cocking maybe ?)
When it is perfectly parallel to the image edges, also the transport through the ccd/cmos sensor is suspect.
