I found this on Tamron's website...

"With this 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens, flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm obtains a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at a minimum focus distance as short as 37.4", enabling close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other objects that normally require the use of a specially designed macro lens."

It seems like you answered your own question, or I am just misunderstanding it. It has to be between 180-300 focal length. Then you can flip the switch and it will allow you to go closer to the subject and be able to focus. If you look on the focusing ring you will see a set of numbers, I think they are yellow, that match up to the range that can only be hit when the macro switch is flipped. Basically if you are at 180-300 you can flip the switch and get closer than you would be able to otherwise.

Give it 3 feet and you are ready for the speed. Tip: avoid harsh contrasts of light, this lens love to show CA
