On a crop, the FA35 is pretty tough to beat. Lots of examples of it and the F50 1.7 in my blog (particularly the two festivals). Figure out your focal length, that's all.

35mm eq is a bit too wide for me, 75mm eq is a bit too narrow, but has some great secondary usage. 53 is pretty perfect.

I also use an ND filter sometimes on the FA35 for daytime to get a bit of bokeh.

Hi,

I may be going out on a limb here but the lens depends on what kind of street photography you'll be making.

I think the 21mm limited is just outstanding for it, and not only is it amazing for night photography with wonderful stars out of the lights, it is also great in close quarters.

But while it's not a walking around lens the 300mm star is absolutely brilliant and it allows for scenes you wouldn't get any other way. Sure, you can see it from far away but its range is so great most of the people in the frame will be too far away to notice it. Particularly I love the way it brings the background to the front, giving you a really shallow depth of field of sorts. Plus it really compacts the perspective and gives any shot a distinct feel. While any photo makes you wonder which lens was used, with a 300 you just know it!

If street photography is to become important to you, might I suggest holding off a while until you've saved some more.

All my street work is done nowadays with my "Good Lady" (SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8) or my "Mistress" (SMC Pentax-A 15mm F3.5), both of which are coming in over your initial budget.

I prefer 35mm focal length for most of my street shots, FA35/f2 would be better over DA35/2.4.

Why wouldn't you use your FA 31 lens for street shots?

I'd recommend it as long as it's not a silver version.

Another vote for the F 35-70. Set Av to 5.6 and let that wonderful lens do the rest. It truly is a remarkable performer. And at around $50 used its a no-brainer.

yes I do, in addition to Canon FD 35/f2, Nikon 35/1.4 AIS, Kiron 28/f2 & Sigma 30 on NEX The reason I recommended FA35/f2 over DA35/f2.4 as the price difference is much smaller compared to FA31 and f2 would give you a slightly more freedom in street portraits. And, FA35 is as brilliant as FA31, seriously value for money.

The 40 XS has a really loud autofocus. Other than that, it's a great lens for street. The Limited version might be better just because the autofocus is much more silent. I own both.
