Could the 77 ltd. be any more perfect?

Wide open, the 77 limited amazes me. The colors are rich and so vibrant that there have been times that I've almost had to slide the saturation down in Lightroom. Just a few examples from a recent senior shoot:

Wide open at 1.8

The colors of this lens are so vibrant straight out of the camera.

This may sound like a shameless commercial for the 77, but this lens has completely revolutionized my shooting.

Very nice shots, walro. Slightly off-topic, but I just watched a video on youtube that might interest you if you are into portrait photography.

Nice shots.
Improve it? Sure, they could optimize it for digital .

Only thing I can think of would be to have a guy at Pentax take a sharpie and write "D" in front of "FA" on the lens ring?

Weather sealing and lens coating, perhaps. Maybe adding a dc motor, except it would bulk the housing out too much, probably. None of that would be helpful for portraiture, granted, except maybe for environmental portraits for Antarctic expeditoners.

Wide open portraits in the antarctic. Makes me think of a song by Jimi Hendrix.

The 77's AF speed is quite alright in my book. Weather sealing should be possible, look at the 100/2.8 Macro WR .
Lens coating is really the only thing they could improve on.

In what way is the lens coating lacking? Because the marketing blurb doesn't say 'for digital'?

No. My reference was to the SP ("Super Protect") coating that is intended to make cleaning of the surface easier.

Yes, weather-sealing would definitely be a plus! For me, the AF on this lens on my K-5 is zippy, but I think AF is over-rated. Isn't the AF in all digital cameras way better than it used to be? Don't get me wrong, I think if I were a sports shooter, I would probably be a Nikon person. But my husband and I have managed to get great action shots, once we learned the right techniques!

That's a good point, I forgot about the SP coating.

It's not something that they make a big thing about, so it's easy to overlook. Also, I haven't come across any marks that a Lens Pen couldn't shift, so far, but maybe I've been fortunate.

The other coating I'd forgotten about until just now is their so-called "ghostless" coating, but I don't know enough about that to comment on its applicability to the Limiteds, or otherwise.
