Vivitar 28mm 2.8 (K03 in the Bestiary) or XR Rikenon 28mm 3.5 (= Pentax-M 28/3.5?) ?

Hi,

I'm trying to decide between to 28s, a Vivitar 28mm 2.8 (Komine, K03 in the Bestiary) and a XR Rikenon 28mm 3.5 (afaik build by Pentax and identical to the M28/3.5)
The Vivitar would cost me 39€/$48 and the Rikenon 30€/$37 in a set with an Exakta HS-1 camera and a Soligor 70-150mm f3.8.

Can anyone tell me, which one is better (sharpness, contrast)?

-Jan

With lenses it's a big set of accumulated experience that determines a 'better' lens. If I have a single poor copy it's hard not to generalize, but if a dozen complain that's a better signal (unless you buy mine of course )

That said, I had a Vivitar 24mm f/2 and still have my Rikenon-P 28mm f/2.8, and both were great lenses. I don't ever plan to let go of the Rikenon. I've heard the P series has the same optics as their XR but more plastic on the body and a useless-to-me P setting. I've also heard that Pentax and Rikenon are the same other than coatings, but I don't know where that one started; I would be surprised if that was true, but optical formulae for commonly-made focal lengths would be mighty similar. It could be true though, but never 'proven' to my satisfaction.

I just noticed, that I mixed up the prices, it was A)Vivitar 28mm for 39/$48 or B)XR Rikenon 28/3.5 + Exkata HS-1 + Soligor 70-150/3.8 for 30/$37.
I got B) down to 25/31 and took it, so I guess we're done here.

Say, was what you heard about the XR-Rikenons and the Rikenon-Ps supposed to be true for all Rikenon-Ps?
I've got a Rikenon 50mm 1.7 lying around here, it's looks identical to the Rikenon-P 50/1.7 but is slightly older (no Ricoh-Pin, it was the Kit-Lens for the Ricoh KR-10 Super),
if the Rikenon-Ps are optically identical to the XR-Rikenons then this one should be too, right?

I believe it went 'just Rikenon' - XR - P, and I'm not certain of optical changes between them. In more than one place I've read the XR formula carried over to the P series. My Rikenon sources include drricoh and butkus - and of course, here!

I can't comment on the Rikenon 28, although the Rikenon 50s I've got are quite good. My experience with my copy of that particular Vivitar was that is was decent but nothing special. I've got a few other old 28s that I like better...

The XR Rikenon should do fine, if I ever get another 28 it'll probably a F/FA28. I'm quite happy with my Rikenon 50/1.7, too (note the bird above the clouds):

I'll post a few shots with the 28 when I get it.
