Thank you Tom. Both TC's surprised me. And I just wish I know all the tools to address PF/CA with my Tamron zoom and I will be all set for the long end need for now.

Regards,
Hin

Is it the MC4 version?
I do not want to be envied, I only wanted the Tamron-F because I have been looking for weeks. I didn't need to think long about it when it appeared on KEH's website.

And yes, it is the MC4 version.

BTW, the hummingbird pics are awesome!

BTW, I just found one on eBay. The bidding is already at $300 now. I think that's ridiculous!

Here's something to laugh at: The original price tag is still on the box, and it says $169.95.

And this is why I came up with the term Moronic Monkeys(TM)

LOL!

I think topics like this, and Internet in general, do strange things to buyers. I think those high prices are entirely due to this topic in particular. I cannot think of anything else that caused those prices to sky rocket... Come on folks, it's just a converter!

I noticed the item and was going to post here but Asahi beat me to it. Amazing! As one of the earlier posters on this thread I wonder how much this never-ending dialogue has pushed the price of this little TC? Glad I got mine at the same time as Javier. I think one party said he would pay as much as $500 for one.........

The Power of suggestion.......and THE FORUM. Ha!

Before I managed to snap up the converter, I feel pressured to open up this thread as I could not find this Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 TC. Tele lens are expensive and difficult to hand hold and having Tamron stop manufacturing these TC items will only jack up the price with higer demand.

And indeed they are rare items to find. We may see it odd and a bit irrational with the bid up prices but I feel badly for the buyers as they should look into all alternatives. They could have spent the money on a Sigm 135-400 or a better prime with K 300mm f/4.0. Why the converter? There is no magic to it and this thread may have promoted the irrational thinking for the potential buyers.

Having owned this converter, I would suggest potential buyers not to go crazy on this item. It is good but I don't find it justified to paid $200+ on this item. If the item is way over the original price of $130, look for the alternatives.

I still want to hear the opinion of Kenko 1.5x and whether AF works satisfactory. I now also own the Promaster 1.7x with AF and I can attest that the AF works reasonably well, even on my consumer tele zoom with Tamron 70-300 Di LD. And best of all, it costs $69.99 when I bought it brand new from wolfes camera store in ebay. In my short test with 2 days of shooting, the PF/CA control when used with my cheapo Tamron zoom is a bit better than that with Tamron 1.4x TC. IQ are yet to be tested. I find the promaster 1.7x TC to be great with hand-holding in 10 to 50 feet distance in good lighting. Beyond 100 feet, I find the SR registered at 300mm gives me problems in long distance objects with hand-holding.

I fully blame Javier for jacking up the prices of the Tamron TC. I'm sure he bought a few dozen of these converters before starting this promotion thread and is now feeding them into the market very slowly to fund his early retirement.

I'm glad I was able to buy this TC during the 2nd wave of availability for under $100, which was my limit. Like Hin says, why spend $500 on it when you can get a long Sigma for that same price that will give you better IQ?

People are dumb...

PS: I'm joking about Javier's retirement plan, by the way (in case I have to point it out ). Although I am convinced that it was this very thread that made prices soar.

Valid comments, Hinman, but folks will be folks.......

Without getting into great detail, here is my experience:
a: My Kenko 1.5 Telelplus works both on FA and DA* (USM), though focus performance is not as good as the Tamron 1.4 (hunts more). IQ is very good.
b: My Promaster will not work with USM though it does try. IQ is very good.

John, thanks for the summary and I can attest to your findings for both Tamron 1.4x and Promaster 1.7x TC. I am on the cheapo side in pushing a consumer tele zoom to its limits. Do you notice more PF/CA when you use your 1.4x? I have much more showing of PF/CA on my Tamron when the 1.4x TC is used. And PF is a bit better controlled when Promaster is used. Perhaps it is more related to Tamron zoom's PF, more pronounced with the TC.

Without a tripod, I find the 1.4x TC work very well even at 420mm. But a bit more difficult for 510mm with the Promaster. Registration of 300mm for SR is very taxing for long distance objects in hand holding.

Wow, the thread that never dies...I saw someone on craigs list have a Tamron MC-4 and was asking $175.00 for it and thought that was crazy, but maybe not...

And, mis, someone has to pay my bills after I am retired, may as well be tamron.

I bought mine 3 weeks ago use without box and pouch for S$100 (abt US$73), which I thought was a very resonable price. But how did it jump so much? Are ppl that desperate or is someone jacking up the price^^;
