You should post a [WANTED] announcement in the marketplace section and refer back in this thread.

If you offer $300 for "like new" then some of the guys having one (or two ) may sell it to you

(I think, $300 is what it is worth nowadays ... last ebay prices (when still traded) where about $250 for NIB or MINT).

A TC is not meant to replace a long lens, but to enhance what you already have.
Example. The 70-300Sigma APO lens and 1.4tamy tc is a great combo to get 420mm, but it will still not outperform my 400mmF/5.6APO sigma lens in speed or quality...
I wasn't asking whether a 70-300 4.0-5.6 with TC will outperform some other lens. I was asking if a 70-300 with 1.4 TC would outperform a 70-300 without TC, cropped to look like 420mm. I'm satisified from what Falconeye and Ben said, and from Richard Day's tests that it won't. But I understand Atindra's point about cropping. So thanks to everyone, I have a better understanding of a what a TC does and when it should be used. Now I have one more question....

I've read many posts about whether a TC will report the adjusted FL to the camera (i.e. for a 300mm lens with 1.4 TC, does the camera report a FL of 300mm or 420?). Or does it depend on the particular TC?

That depends on the particular tc. He needs to have the logic onboard to tell the camera, to multiply the fl, the lens reports. I am not sure, but at least I do not know any tc, that does that for Pentax. (Though I'll try with the Sigmas, as they are dedicated to certain lenses.)

It was removed from the readmap at about the time they decided to make K30D the K-7 (i.e., to redesgn it a bit). Which was right after Photokina last year.

One could feel that they readjusted priorities a bit and haven't decided yet when to make the new TC. I am sure it isn't dead. Just postponed. If I am not wrong, they showed a prototype of the TC during Photokina.

This explains why the Price of the Tamron 1.4TC MC-4 has sky rocketed again. I have seen them selling for as much as $500.00

Apparently only 2 TC out of many (one 1.5x & one 1.4x) are SDM lens compatible. And there is no Pentax TC competition at all. See the list I have compiled earlier

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is the list I have compiled / updated with emphasis on DA* lenses with SDM . And this was updated 090430
*Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 AF works. SDM no re Brad (photo.net)
*Tamron-F Pz-AF MC4 1.4x both SDM & AF works for DA*300mm re Dave (photo.net)
*Tamron-F Pz-AF MC4 1.4x both SDM & AF works for DA*300mm as per Toshi, moderator of Pentaxforums.com.
*Tamron-F Pz-AF MC4 1.4x both SDM & AF works only 10% of the time for DA* 50-135mm but hunts a lot re Miserere
*Tamron-F Pz-AF MC4 1.4x with the Sigma 70-200mm -new with HSM . The HSM AF works. It really didn't work all that well indoors at night according to Dave Hollander of Photo.net
*Kenko DG Pz-AF 1.5x TELEPLUS MC no AF no SDM on DA*300mm re Dave (photo.net)
*Kenko DG Pz-AF 1.5x TELEPLUS MC AF works on older AF lens re Dave (photo.net)
*Kenko Pz-AF 1.5X TELEPLUS MC only AF works; SDM no as per jgredline of Pentaxforums.com
*Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x TELEPLUS SHQ both AF & SDM works for DA*200mm and all older AF lens re Daniel
*Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x TELEPLUS SHQ both AF & SDM works for DA*300mm re Borno (Tom) of Pentaxforums.com ….SDM hunts a bit with DA*300mm
palmor of Pentaxforums.com confirmed it did not hunt as much with DA*300mm in good light
*Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x TELEPLUS SHQ both AF & SDM works for DA*50-135mm but it does hunt quite a bit and often fails to lock focus according to heliphoto of Pentaxforums ; Buddha Jones of Pentaxforums not happy with its result ;

If I happen to have misquoted the experienced members in the compiled list above, pl let me know so that I can correct them

Daniel

I sold my Tamron 1.4X a while back and have regreted it ever since ( no I didn't sell it for one of those inflated prices ). Anyway I purchased a Promaster 1.7X that has contacts for SDM- Power Zoom, but it does not focus on my Sigma 70-200 HSM. It will hunt but not lock focus. Sucks!!

No way am I going to pay the price they are going for now. I will wait and hopefully Pentax will come out with something sooner than later.
I always keep an eye open though for a decent price on the Tamron.
The Kenko 1.5X seems like too much of a risk to pay too much for it. I had an experience not long ago I seen photo4less carrying the Kenko 1.5 and the picture was the PZ-AF SHQ model so I called to confirm. They told me for sure it was the one I was looking for but low and behold when I received it it was the Teleplus MC version.
I quess thats been happening a bit also.

As I have been playing around with my Tamron 90mm macro ... I have been having ideas of putting the Tamron x1.4 TC on and then the 90mm .... and see what I can come up with ... especially if i can get better than 1:1 magnification as well.

I guess watch this space and see what I come up with.

You are NOT wrong. They did show a mock-up of it (behind glass, I believe) and said it would be available by Spring 2009. They changed their minds shortly after that.
