If one doesn't know what one wants, maybe a zoom is better to start. Even an inexpensive one. Then you can analyze your pictures and see what focal length you are actually using. If you have already taken a lot of shots with a zoom, maybe check out the focal lengths that you used for shots you like. Just a little advice, that money can wait a bit to be spent!
