Scored One More -- A Takumar 300mm F4 Preset

I was just cruising Ebay looking at the M42 offerings (not much to do on a Friday night, sad I know ), and I came across a lens that was new to me, a Takumar 300mm F4 Preset. Now, I LOVE preset lenses, my Takumar 200mm F3.5 Preset and my Tair 3 300mm F4.5 Preset being my two favorite lenses. I never knew they made an F4 version of the 300mm Preset (I also have the tele-tak 300mm F6.3 preset). I HAD TO HAVE IT!

It looks in great condition with original case and metal cap and had a Buy It Now button, so I couldn't resist.

I'm hoping it is a match for the Tair 3 as the Tair 3 is my most used telephoto for wildlife and it is VERY heavy, so I'd like to get a little lighter 300mm. The Takumar 300 F4 Preset has 18 front mounted aperture blades compared to the Tairs 16 front mounted blades. It is a 4 element design, so I think it is similar to the Tairs triplet design.

I hope it gets here before next weekend. I want to take it to the mountains to find some mulies or maybe a few elk if I hike up high enough.

Definitely interested in seeing a good comparison, I've been wanting a Tair for a while.

I too enjoy shooting with preset lenses, I have an entire range of presets that run from a Pentacon 30/3.5 thru the Takumar 300/4 they are really a blast to use on Pentax digital (K10 & K20 in my case).

I don't have the Tair 300, but I do have the Tak 200/3.5 and the 300/4 and I like them both. I believe that my 200 is slightly sharper wide open than the 300 but the 300 isn't any slouch. With a weight of nearly 1600grams it dwarfs my A*300/4. The minimum focus distance is nearly 18 feet compared to approximately 13 feet for the A* (not really an issue) but wide open the Tak 300/4 has less CA than the A* 300/4 although the A* does get the nod for sharpness.

While I have always considered my Tak 300/4 to be a preset lens it is technically a 'click stop' lens. The forward aperture ring is just that, an aperture ring that clicks into place, there is no way to set the preset aperture, but since I usually set my presets for minimal aperture and adjust the aperture to the desired depth of field by sight just before I shoot, it works the same as one for me. The version I have runs from F4 to F32, I believe there is an earlier version that only goes to F22 and that one may indeed be a true preset but I don't know as I've never used one of those.

Have fun with the lens. Like most posters here, I too have the 200/3.5. If I ever decide to take my M42 kit beyond 200mm the tak300 is one candidate.

I suspect the decision will be somewhat like yours, if I trip over one, I will just "have" to have it
