Step Up or Step Down Adapter

I recently came into a couple of sets of Hoya ND filters in 55mm and 49mm. I have kit 18-55, and 50-200 lenses, both with 52mm threads. Common sense would tell me that it would be better to buy a 52-55 adapter, but I don't think the lens hood would fit. Would stepping down from 52-49mm create any noticeable vignetting with these lenses?

Why not buy a 52mm and stepdown ring to 49mm ?

That was my thought, but I didn't know if the smaller filter would cause any vignetting.

For the tele lens vignetting might come into play at the short end but only if the FOV is impacted, not so much due to the diameter but the stacked height will push the filter forward a little further than you want. same with the WA. The rings are cheap, try both and see what happens

Roll up stiff paper and experiment with various lengths and diameters of tubes.

After-market hoods would accommodate the step-up solution as well.

I think you missunderstood me.

Buy a 52mm filter and buy an adapter to make the 49mm on the lens into 52mm
