Tamron Releases New 70-200 but not for Pentax

Two new Tamron lenses: 70-200mm f/2.8 VC USD and 90mm f/2.8 Macro VC USD | Photo Rumors

As per usual there's a new Tamron lens out and it's not being released for Pentax.

The Macro is a new design and both lenses are moisture and dust resistant.

A very interesting Photokina this year to be sure.

I wonder if it's going to change the optic make up... If all they are adding is USD (ultra silent drive - which could be prone to problems vs screwdrive) and VC (vibration control - which we don't need) I don't know if it matters. Looks nice though and I will probably want one

The macro is a completely new design apparently. I guess the old one is worthless now on the resale market too.

If Pentax releases a FF Dslr, ( which they probably will eventually since Sony and Nikon have already announced their 24 MP FF Dslrs) Pentax will probably sell a licensed from Tamron 70-200 mm and their (Tamron) 24-70mm f/2.8, both with SDM as well.

Why would the old Tammy 70-200 2.8 be worthless now? People love that lens.

I think he's referring to the 90 macro, but your statement still stands for that too...

Yep - Just noticed that too. My Tammy 70-200 is 1:3 magnification, while this one is 1:8 - pretty big difference... maybe it helps with the long end distant subject resolution. By my 70-200's performance on distant subjects is really good, and midrange subjects is prime-quality. So I don't know... 1:3 magnification is pretty useful on my Tammy too.. My Sigma 50 has 1:8 magnification and it really sucks for trying to shoot pictures of bees when i tried to.

I don't care about VC - if it had silent fast motor like the Sigmas, I'd be more jealous. But this update seems sooooorta crappy if I may say so..

New lens weight: 1470g
Old lens weight: 1150g

New lens length and width is slightly less than old lens

New lens: 23 elements 18 groups
Old lens: 18 elemens 13 groups

Number of aperture blades is the same - both are rounded

New lens: Moisture and dust resistant (maybe this is a big deal)
Old lens: Vacuum cleaner

I hope it doesn't cost significantly more than the old 70-200, because then it'd be sorta cost ineffective - unless it somehow outperforms the old one by a huge margin, and I highly doubt that.

Eh, at least I got a copy of the older 70-200, although not nuts about it's AF in anything but bright light (then again I like shooting baseball, and I use a K20, so I might just be nuts).

The dust sealing would be nice though, although the added weight doesn't sound appealing.

They are trying to catch up to Sigma - it does suck though that none of the WR lenses from both third party manufacturers are in Pentax mount...

I have the older version of the Tamron 70-200mm. It is a good copy and my favorite lens. But compared to it's Canikon
siblings, it was getting long in the tooth. The Nikon 70-200mm is a freak in terms of sharpness, but with the added elements
in the new lens design and VC, it will probably get fairly close. The biggest gripe was it's auto focus speed, low light focusing ability
and sample variation. Who knows, there is a good chance that a K-mount version will still materialize, as is often the case.

For me the news is great. If I cannot come right with Pentax in a few months and decide to add another system, then this lens is just what the doctor ordered.
Nice to have an alternative.

Perhaps there is no Pentax mount because Ricoh has made an agreement with Tamron to rebadge some lenses and sell them as Pentax lenses, like with the 18-270?

Keep an eye on the Pentax lens roadmap and see if it changes soon.

Maybe Ricoh has plans to focus on camera development and leave the lens design to Tamron? Maybe I just started a new rumour?

I'm going to misuse your quote everywhere and help that rumour propagate~

Here's an additional scenario: Tamron will subsequently announce a 28-75 2.8 PZD VC lens , in CaNikonSony mount only.

Then: Pentax will announce a new Full Frame flagship camera, along with 2 new lenses for full frame, the 70-200 SDM and the 28-75 SDM - plausible? Rumours, rumours, rumours,...

Oh wait one more thing - Tamron will announce a new Weather Sealed 1.4x TC as well. That's on Pentax's roadmap, right?
