I thought about that and agree, but don't they tab into a ridge into the F and FA lenses?

Try stacking step-down rings. I haven't owned the A 50/1.7, but have had the FA, F, and M (currently) equivalents. On the F and M, I've used a 49-37 and then 37-30.5 step down ring stacked, with a cheap snap-on 30.5mm lens cap. This did not cause vignetting, was cheap, worked great as a hood and lens protector, and is more compact than most hoods.

No need to stack. A 49-28mm works great. The lens in the photo is FA50 F/1.7

Here's a 49-28mm on a D-FA 100mm macro:

I've used a metal hood from a Takumar 135 with my 50mm f1.7 - it is the same as the metal hoods on ebay, but is 50mm deep. It works fine, no vignetting.

I sold my A50 F/1.4 before I had the idea of using step-down rings so I can't tell for sure if it works without vignetting. But a 49-28 adapter works with an F28 F/2.8 (photo below), so it should work with an A50 F/1.4. If not, a 49-37 + 37-30.5 should work (I haven't been able to find a 49-30.5).
