Hood for A50/1.7?

Greetings,

I'd like to get a metal hood (just for the period looks as opposed to rubber) for the A50/1.7 and am wondering how deep a hood I can get away with given it's used on a crop sensor camera?

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've got one like this (it is about 1 inch deep, screws in and I use a 52mm cap on it, never take it off):

Metal Screw Mount Lens Hood for 49mm Lens | eBay

Don't beat me up as that isn't my exact one, but looks pretty much the same! You could go for something a little shallower if it is a concern, but these things are pretty cheap on ebay.

It works great on the A 50mm f1.7 - no vignetting. It has mild vignetting with the F series lens but the front element is more recessed vs. the A series.

Apparently you posted as I was posting . I'm all for as deep a hood as is doable without vignetting. I figured something like you posted would work, I wondered about something deeper. Thanks!

Ah, with a deeper one like this, 49mm Telephoto Metal Lens Hood with Filter Thread Mount

the description says: "The angles of the Telephoto Metal hoods match the shooting angles of lenses with Telephoto focal lengths from 70mm on up."

50mm x 1.5 = 75mm

Hmmm.

I uploaded a spreadsheet called hoodcalc (look for it as a zip file) which allows you to calculate the hood length based upon diameter of the hood, diameter of the front element, the focal length of the lens and the sensor size

the only issue is that it gave you the hood length from the center line of the front element so you needed to consider the set-back of the front element from the edge of the accessory ring

It's all ok, maybe a bit too expensive. You won't notice any vignetting even on full frame.

I use a takumar 200mm f5.6 hood (49mm) on my M 50 f1.7 and would think it will be same on the A lens. And it is fine at infinity with smallest f stop--so good anywhere, I did not check if also works with a filter.

I have the same 49mm metal hood as pxpaulx - works great. You could also try one of those 3-step rubber hoods. They are cheap, work well, & are adjustable.

I don't have that exact lens, but . . .

On my F50 1.7 I use one a trifle shorter than 1 1/4" that is 62mm at the business end. It's an Asahi from Takumar days.
On my A50 1.4 I use one marked Takumar 1:2.8 105mm and 1:4 100mm. Around 1 1/2" but the front element is farther forward with that lens. It's also 62mm at the business end.

I don't use filters.

Heavystar on eBay. Good quality and inexpensive. Use his tele hood if shooting on APS-C (dSLR) or his normal hood if shooting 35mm film.

Steve

BTW...A rubber hood would be quite appropriate for when the lens was made.

Yeah, I guess you're right, but they always seemed a little cheesy to me

I'm getting to that point too. However, for my Tamron 70-200 and 17-50....because the front elements are SO large and without a hood well exposed I think they'll be an exception for me. The 70-200 has a deep enough hood I suppose, the 17-50 and a petal hood? Nah, filter.

What about that square Pentax knockoff? Its a square hood made for 50mm.. called PH-SA49. A little more expensive, but looks more Pentax.
