I am a big fan of the Volna-9, too.
It is the only lens I know which has a Gaussian Bokeh in the background.

If you look at the circles of confusion, all lenses I own behave like the left one (Gaussian Bokeh in the foreground), except for the Volna:

Example (top right foreground, bottom left background):

A nice example:

Is that a Tessar thing or an exclusively Volna-9 thing? (Volna is a Tessar-based design.) I've been meaning to get a 50/2.8 in a Tessar design -- never tried one.

It's an exclusively Volna-9 thing, AFAIK.
I have not found any other lens so far showing this behaviour.
There probably are others, old ones, but I don't know them.

Well, I hear talk of the "Tessar look" but I don't know what it is...

Volna 9 50 2.8 (macro) (dropped, prefer f2 and faster, can always use tubes)
Forget about maximum aperture or macro aspects - you get the Volna 9 because it produces distinctive images, as blende8 also pointed out.

I have never tried the lenses you list, but the favourite appears to be the 44-2, because of its rendering qualities, though the 44-6 and 7 are also popular because they are aren't as old and have some improvements (but their rendering is more tame, less crazy, and they have fewer aperture blades, I think)

I don't find the 8-element Super Tak superior to the SMC 7-element ones, although it may be compared to the 7-element non-SMCs. I think it is mainly a cult/fetish thing that gives it its value. I've got one around here -- maybe I'll give it another look.

There is a very subtle difference that I noticed between the 8 element and the 7 element Super Taks. Maybe it was in my mind, but the earlier version seemed to have more of a painterly bokeh.

if you have the opportunity to buy 1 or 2 of the m42 lenses listed below, which one would you choose and why?
smc tak 50 1.4 Good lens, I use mine a lot.
s-m-c tak 50 1.4
smc tak 55 1.8
fujinon 55 1.8 Supposed to be very good, it has a good reputation, but I get mixed results from mine. When it's good - it's great.
yashinon 50 1.7 dsm
yashica 50 2
yashica 50 1.4 dx
auto chinon 55 1.7 Great lens, there's a tendency to flare if you point it at the sun. But it's sharp, I really like mine.
smc m50 1.7
thanks in advance
I don't think you would go far wrong with any of those lenses, the three I have are lenses I'll keep. Even the Fujinon, there's a sweet spot in the lens somewhere but I can't remember where it is !
And I would always recommend a Helios to anyone who wants a great MF lens, either the 44-2 or the 44M, I have both and in that range they are my firm favorite lenses.

There are lots of sample shots out there for the lens. It is sharper than the 7 element but in some conditions prone to flare and reflections especially with night shots. Also lower contrast, although a hood really helps. I use one from a 105/2.8.
The 8 element was the sharpest 50 at the time it was made
