Experience with updated 50-135?

Pentax Forums interviewed a Pentax engineer at Photokina. Here's an excerpt:
Q: Has this SDM quality control issue been resolved?

A: Yes. The components used in the 16-50mm and 50-135mm lenses have been redesiged, and all lenses produced in 2012 or later should no longer fail.
My first reaction to this exchange is to ask why Pentax waited until 2012 to update a lens that they released in 2007. So, I am a little skeptical.

Has anyone had a chance to compare a 2012 50-135 (or a 16-50) with a copy manufactured earlier? If so, are there any apparent differences, e.g., faster AF?

Jeff
