Weird question - is there a new version of the DA70?

I got an email from Abe's of Maine that announced that the Pentax smcP DA 70mm f2.4 Limited Lens is available for Pre-Order.

Ok, why Pre-Order and what is with the "P" at the end of SMC?

I've convinced myself to believe that some dealers use the "smcP" in exchange to "smc Pentax" and now they're just using them all mixed together... IMO it doesn't look anything different from the current DA70.

I think thats it. If Pentax were making a new lens (or new version) we would have been told about it along with the announcements we recently got.

I'm not trying to start rumors, heaven forbid here at PF, but it was just weird - they are an AD for Pentax after all.

Just to prove my point, even B&H does it for some lenses.... Especially with the limiteds.

I see that, but at least they don't list it as a "Pre-Order" item

Do you have the lens hood on?

Not if you take the hood off it doesn't! (also note the lens is focussed at infinity, where it is the most compact)

Didn't mean to start anything here .

I am home this morning and have looked at my DA70 without its hood and they are identical IMHO. Recall that the hood, being a LImited and well made, is nearly always on 70s and hence we have the impression that the lens is larger than it actually is by itself.

Well, I guess if you are looking at it, it must be the same.............I had a DA 40mm pancake that looked very similar to the pic in the link, so I just assumed that they were introducing a pancake 70mm....................I guess not.............it was intriguing to consider.......... all is well
