My two walk-around lenses are a Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 and a DA40XS.

I do prefer the versatility of he 17-70 and it's great at both ends, but heavy.
Primes, for some, including me, take some getting used to.
But as a lightweight lens, the 40XS is hard to beat for the price.

17 is wide enough for me in the streets, and 70 is long enough.
I do a bit of hiking now and again, and I can fill the frame nicely when using the 40.

Looking at the distribution of your shots, I keep thinking that the 16-45mm, combined with a 90mm macro might be a good combo.

Thanks very much for all the advice!

For the curious, I've chosen the 21mm Limited prime and the 18-135mm zoom. Picked up both on this forum so I only went over budget by a couple hundred. I would have liked a bit faster lenses, but this combo should give me a versatile fl coverage and also be easy to travel around with.

I've got a big trip coming up and I'm looking forward to putting them through their paces!

I was wondering if you could comment on the combo after you have used it for a while?
In what situations do you use the 21mm?

21mm limited

I too have the 18-135 pentax and the 21mm limited lenses. The zoom is used constantly as it is quite versatile. I have found the small, lightweight 21mm limited to be great for street photography. It is light, accurate, focuses quickly, and can take nice photos when the shutter button is pressed without even focusing through the viewfinder. I get some interesting people shots without causing subjects to experience "camera-freeze".

I would get something like an FA43 or a Sigma 28/30mm for a walkaround prime. If you don't need the WR and extra reach of the 18-135 then go with the 17-70 as I've read that it has better IQ. It's a bit cheaper also.

EDIT: I see you've already decided on the 18-135 + 21mm. Great choice since you'll get much better IQ with the 21mm than the 18mm end of the zoom.

EDIT2: Okay so this topic is pretty old. Oops...

This is a really late reply, but if you're curious .. the combo worked out great! The IQ of both lenses is better than my ability, if that makes sense, and the zoom is really versatile. I do like its range much better than the 18-55 kit lens I had been using. The prime was fun to play around with, and it was nice to have when I didn't want to offend people with a big honkin camera or when I didn't want to lug a lot of stuff around.

I used the 21mm for some wide landscape shots, and I used it a lot when I was in smaller places (bars, houses, military cargo planes, etc.. ).

I had a feeling you might have been going to say that.

I'm really enjoying my new 20 mm and I'm also still having an illicit affair with my 15 mm.
