The 40 Limited is an awesome lens. I don't use it often but I did get out with it some the past few weeks. The small size makes it painless to carry along anywhere. Shirt pocket, pants pocket, no problem. Mine is sharp as a tack wide open and that's where it gets most of its use, low light and indoors. It's also excellent outside too and is capable of some stunningly sharp landscapes if the size fits and that's the only problem I have with it. I mostly prefer a little wider lens for a walk around and I have an old but always sharp and reliable 28/3.5 Tak in my bag. I have no experience with the XS so I can't comment or compare.

Does the XS have the quick shift focus like the LTD? If not, that is reason enough to get the LTD. For me, the DA40 LTD is one of my most used lenses, and I have the 15, 21 and 70 also. If I'm traveling really light, it's often only the DA40 LTD.

It doesn't have quickshift, you have to move the camera-body switch to MF if you want to use manual focus. I bought a used XS after trying both. I have enough manual lenses. I'm sure that both variants are fine, I was just curious why, in Japan at least, the XS is often more expensive at retail than the Ltd.

I'm not sure I can resist the new pricing on the K01 at 350/450 (with goodies). I'll probably end up selling both my K200D (backup that never gets used) and DA40. I find that I actually prefer my A50f1.7 but I would to at least have the 40xs around.

Are there any problems mounting a 27to49mm step up ring with 2 filters on it? Significant vignetting?

The DA40 limited is metal, quick-shift and it covers full-frame. The XS is apsc only and plastic. Sounds like on a cropped sensor they are very similar optically.

I've heard differing reports on whether either lens covers full frame, at all apertures. The most common description of the optics of the XS is that they are the same as the Ltd, but with the latest coatings and rounded aperture blades.

This topic was about why the XS is more expensive than ( or the same price as ) the Ltd in its home market Japan. Maybe the size and newer coatings ? Maybe just Pentax pricing weirdness :-)

I can tell you that from personal experience, the DA40xs provides a full frame image circle with no signs of vignetting.

I bought a 40 Ltd for less than the 40 XS. I received a 40 XS not a 40 LTD.

The infamous Overstock.com fiasco that took 2 months to resolve.
