F 50mm F1.4 vs FA 50mm F1.4

It's true. I'm stuck in this dilemma.

Turns out after I purchased the FA 50mm f1.4, I went home and discovered that my dad had the F 50mm f1.4. It would of been nice of my dad to inform me he had a 50mm f.1.4 lens when I called to ask him which lens to purchase (maybe that's why he said all the nice things about the 50mm.. doh >.<) I know I'm going to sell one of the lenses, leaning more toward the FA (since I just bought that one), but out of curiosity, what's the difference between the FA series and the F series (if there is any)?

if you were in my situation, which lens would you sell?

You must be the first person that I know that own that lens. Please keep me posted if you want to get rid of it.

There is no difference between the A/F/FA 50/1.4 and 1.7 lenses. They have identical optics and are legendary. Only thing to note is that the FA probably has a better, updated autofocus mechanism. My F 50/1.7 has a very noisy autofocus mechanism.

The FA transmits more information to the camera body. You can use the MTF program line on the K10 if you want.

Optically they are the same.

I have an F version. I've never compared it to the FA myself but I believe the F scored higher than the FA in the Photodo test. The difference of course could very well be due to sample variation. Some people claimed the F version focused faster too. BTW, there is an F/1.4 in eekbay now.

You are correct but there are different aspects on each lens build and what they are suited for. Although each lens has a very similar range there is a finite difference. The only thing I note is the f series has impressed me well beyond the FA.

Yeah that's the lens I ended up buying for myself recently. It is a great lens.

Do you know the finite difference between the F series lens and the FA series lens? I'm just curious.

Keep the F, sell the FA. The F50/1.4 is better built with tighter QC than the FA. The old Photodo results agree as well.

IMO I'd do some test shooting and also go out and shoot similar scenes with both. Evaluate which one you like the best. From here it's not possible to know if you have a good f and a poor FA or vice versa or 2 good copies of each. There can be sample variations. Test them both out for a week or 2 and then decide. Also take a critical look at the F for any issues, scratches, oil, fungus, dust etc.
